When I was a kid my mom would put a roast in the oven before church with a loaf of bread dough on top to proof. When we’d get home from church the roast was ready and the bread went in the oven.
Google will tell you you’re and idiot if you leave your oven on. Thoughts? |

Nearly every Sunday while I was growing up. Now, I use the crock pot. It makes better roasts.

Our house burnt down when I was in the 3rd grade & still have sights / smells stamped into my noggin...I still cringe even when the unloaded groceries are left on the stove top waiting to be put up.
Any & everything fire hazard freaks me out...ya don't know unless ya know. |

Never, I've seen too many homes destroyed or heavily damaged due to cooking on the stove top and in the stove while homeowners are gone. Like Strummer, I don't like leaving the house with a crock pot on. Artos, I don't leave anything on the stove even when it's off, even while unloading groceries, still freaks me out as well.

My sister and BIL lost their home and most of their belongings by leaving a dishwasher on when they left for work one morning. Very sad deal.

Same here. With few exceptions (hot water heater), I leave nothing on that generates significant heat when I leave my bourse, this includes a crockpot. I not only turn off but unplug all small electrics when not in use (curling irons, coffee makers, irons). I also never leave the house with appliances running that use water, such as the dishwasher and washing machine. Ever. |

Yup, been to fridge and freezer fires
![]() Can't unplug them, but you can keep the immediate space behind them free from storage and keep the lint/dust removed from cover/fan. Either way, it sucks for everyone. Many on here with a lot more experience than me. Stay safe!! |

How many of you who own a pellet smoker leave it going while you are away?most of the ones I've seen are sitting on the back patio next to the house.
I'm one of the weirdos that leave a crock pot, oven, wash machine, dishwasher, fans, you name it running while I am gone. I support the local fire department. If I don't proactively attempt fire Hazzards. Those fine folks might be out of a job! In all seriousness. I do not see the difference in a Water Heater being left on or an oven. I’ve left the stove on for four or five hours after I took the food out. And I was there! So no, I never leave the house with anything cooking or the dryer running. If we’re gonna be gone several days I turn the water off as well.

![]() And the water valve to your toilets? Man some of you would go insane if you saw what all was running in my house with no one here. I use the timer on our stove to start the oven often while we are away to cook roasts and other things When I was 9 our house burned down but it wasn’t that traumatic, lost some pics but otherwise most everything was replaceable Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

We do it all the time. Propane stove. I also frequently finish briskets and such over night in the oven and just let the temp probe wake me up when done.

I do it a lot. In fact, my oven is designed to do that. I'll put whatever in the oven, put it on time cook so it will turn off when it is done and when I return it is ready.
Sometimes I will even put my food in the oven, set a delayed start for x hours, cook time for x time so it will start and stop on time. The risk with that is sometimes the gas oven doesn't start after 3 tries, it stops trying and I'll come home to a uncooked meal. But that rarely happens. |

I mean if we are that worried about it starting a fire, I would rather that happen when we aren't home than when we are there. No doubt there are some personal items that would be hard to lose but the only thing that truly can't be replaced would be my wife and kids.

My ex-wife's dad wouldn't go to bed with anything in the house plugged in. Not even a alarm clock. I think it was more so because he was cheap, and didn't want to spend the electricity than scared of a fire.

We regularly set the dishwasher to go off when we're gone, set the crock pot/instapot to go, set the Roomba to go, leave the A/C on!, etc.
The office area of my business burned up back in 1999. The fire was started by the wiring to a light fixture in the ceiling arcing and catching insulation on fire. The light fixture was NOT on at the time. So, the possibility of fire exists regardless of the precautions you take. Don't live in fear. |

Ac is always on, fans are running 95% of the time I'm home. Never go to bed without a box fan running for noise. I'm not worried about the water heater. I'm not worried about leaving things on, it's just what the items are. There is a level of aware, then there is a level of paranoia and then there is bubba came over this weekend with a thirty pack and we installed the electricity in the new add on

I do this fairly often, put roast in and leave for 4-6 hours. And that was standard procedure by my mom when i was growing up. Decided to ask my son...the fireman. he said it worries him and he tries not to do it. then he messaged me that they do leave the crockpot on and the pellet grill running right next to the house, and he's not sure there's much difference. Said they even leave the pellet running at the firehouse when they are gone. Ultimately, he said it's a risk running any of them when you are gone.....

A buddy did in a new home. Left for church and left something cooking in the oven. Well church lasted longer than anticipated and the roast turned into jerky and smoke damaged the whole house including all their clothes...
