But does anyone have recommendations for a place to hunt hogs with a trad bow that isn't too expensive, and isn't more than a couple hours from Austin? I've logged at least 50 trips with my recurve on public land in central Texas without killing a pig yet.
I've received some recommendations from Bisch in the past but I can't remember what they were. And what can I expect as a good price for a day hunt? I know last time I looked this stuff up I just decided to hunt harder on public. ![]() |

Archery isn’t allowed on the llano river but you can hunt hogs, whitetail and axis with buckshot all up and down the river. It’s free, but it’s hard work packing one out sometimes. I wish they allow archery but no luck yet.

It’s common knowledge around here. Lots of people deer hunt and almost all the locals dove/duck hunt the river.

I hear yea. Recurve and a hill style bow is what I use. Different game for sure. Good luck. I used to have several places around here I could turn you on to but over the years, they ended up leasing out to groups. Might try chamber of commerce. They keep a list of ranches with hunting available. Don’t have the number off hand but it’s the llano chamber.

I sure appreciate the help! I've got unfinished business at Granger, but my wife might need to see some blood on arrows to decide I'm not crazy first.

There’s a long draw just west of the primitive camp that’s full of hog wallows. I usually just find the most recent activity and set up down wind from the approach trail. Sometimes they show sometimes not but I usually see hogs there.

I’m about 4.5 hours from Austin but with a little notice I could easily get you set up on hogs with Trad gear.
I have 4 places I can hunt within 30 minutes of my house that are all set up for Trad bow hunting. I haven’t seriously hunted hogs in 3-4 years. Just got burnt out. Between killing a handful of hogs a year with my bows, wife and kids with rifles, pulling week long hunts every night with family from out of state I basically just quit hunting them. My brother comes from Wyoming every year and slaughters them. If your interested Shoot me a pm and we can get a hunt planned Might even be able to get Micheal to join us!!! |

I thought about offering our place but pigs have been scarce lately. Hate to have someone drive that far not to get shots.

We've been going to Double L in Mission Valley (near Victoria) for over 10 years now for exotics and hogs. There's no shortage of piggies or stands to suit what your shooting. Pops and family are great people and the price is great. This is the slow time of year for exotics so you shouldn't have a problem finding a time to go that works with your schedule. Just a warning - you might getting some itchy fingers after seeing some of the exotics there.

If Abilene isn't too far, try Dos Plumas hunting ranch. Brice is a trad shooter and has lots of swine.

![]() I was smart enough to time the trip to coincide with a cowtown shoot though, so the lack of pigs wasn't an issue. |

x2 on Frankie up at the Fowler Ranch. We have hogs at my small lease, but when it came time to get my son his first kill with a bow, I decided to take him up to Fowler so we'd have plenty of opportunities to work through the actual killing part with a bow on some pigs.

Don't hold me to this, but I am talking to my mother in law (owner of the farm) about taking a few bow hunters over there.
It would only be a "one hunter at a time" type thing. There will be no accommodations (meals / lodging), and it will be hunting from a popup blind over a feeder. If she decides to do it, I'll have to be there with the hunter the whole time. Just waiting on her to approve it, and on how much she wants to charge if she does. Any suggestion on price? Rick |
