I would look around for a better price, even though $5k is pretty reasonable. I got a quote from Henna Chevrolet for a new 6.0 liter to replace in my 2500 HD. Just wanted to see what it would cost and they quoted me $4200 for the motor and all the wiring harnesses and everything. That did not include install, but I know someone that would install it for $800. Also came with a warranty and all of that too. All I know is that I cannot buy a new truck for $5000 so when it comes time to replace, I will drop a new motor in it.

UPDATE for those interested.
Got that second opinion and the mechanic strongly recommended an upper engine rebuild. New heads, gaskets, spark plugs and wires, oil change, coolant change. Maybe a little more. Cost was $3,800 with a three year warranty. I went that direction and the truck runs better than ever.
Thanks for the guidance, gentlemen. Saved me $1,500.

And I would be mindful to fire it up and drive it around regularly.
