    Velvet archery hunt

    G'day all.

tried to make the most of the weekend, got in four days hunting after red stags, saw 7 or 8 stags (which is a top effort here if I do say so myself!) but just not the one I was hoping to find. It was good stalking into bow range of unaware deer.

the second stag I would be tempted to take with the bow but I just don't like shooting immature animals.

managed to take another hare though, shot this bloke at 46 yards as he fed out in the evening. Left him on the back of the ute overnight only to find that the old mans cat had eaten half his back leg the following morning!

    The hunt continues!

Very nice. I bet your patience will pay off.
Do you have access to private hunting grounds or are you allowed to hunt in public areas?

I hope so, if I don't take one in velvet which it's likely I wont as they're about to strip it'll be winter before I get another good crack. Hunting in the rut is hard work here, they're not overly vocal.

It's mostly private where red deer live in my state. There's a little public but they get a lot of pressure there and move out. The vast majority of red deer habitat here (around 85%) is non-huntable national park which makes it tough.

Nice. Sounds like I would have been having cat as a side dish.

I would love to get a Buck in velvet but the season opens late here in Missouri and the Deer are out of velvet aroundlate July or August.I haven't even heard of anyone finding a dead Buck around our area and having it mounted in velvet?I'm sure it has happened...just to no one I know personaly.

That cat can double as croc bait!
