Default DIY Arkansas Archery Bear Hunt

Wish me luck! I知 headed back to the Ouachita Mountains on Sunday (9/26/21) for a week long backpack bear hunt. This will be my first official bear hunt. I致e hunted deer in the Ouachitas since 2002, but only during rifle season. Archery deer season runs concurrently with archery bear, so hopefully I can bring home something.

I was born and raised in Arkansas, and when I was a teen my Grandpa bought me a lifetime hunting license. Thanks to him, this trip is only costing me gas and PTO!

I致e seen posts on here before about DIY Arkansas bear hunts, so I figured I throw another one up and have the Green Screen hold me accountable. I値l post as service allows during the trip.

No sir, I値l be on public land in Zone 2. Baiting is only allowed on private land.

My plan is to set-up on some sign and blow a fawn bleat. Probably just gonna scare everything out of the county, but at least I値l be outside!

Just realized I never followed up on this thread

Two things, I saw a ton of deer and zero bears and/or sign on my hunt, and research the trail restrictions before you head into a National Forest in Arkansas.

I can稚 write here what I felt in my soul when I had walked 5 miles from my truck and started hearing tinges of 迭ainbow in the dark by Dio playing on a Cam-Am speaker system that was headed my way

Wilderness areas folks, that痴 where Dio and Can-Ams aren稚 allowed and rainbows are never in the dark

I did see beautiful scenery, find a few quartz crystals, eat some fresh-ripe muscadines, and enjoy some Ouachita mountain creek water though! Don稚 worry, I left the crystals where I found them.

Man, if I壇 had a gun, I could致e filled a truck bed! Unfortunately, I had a bow and was extremely humbled! I started to draw on decent 8 point but he busted me, and I let one fly on a doe but didn稚 connect.

I watched a doe feed while moving towards me for about 20 minutes after sunset. She finally got within 40 yards with about 5 minutes of legal light left, and when I drew back I realized I had forgotten to turn down the brightness on my fiber optic pins! I wear bifocals in normal life, but have never been able to shoot comfortably with them on so I didn稚 have them with me. When I got to full draw with fiber optics on high in the darkening woods, I could barely make out the tail and nose of the doe due to the beaming lights on my sight! I knew I had a clear shot between us and behind her, so I centered up on her body as best as I could, picked the spot in the blaring sight lights as good as I could, and let it fly. I shot WAY under her, and she went home safe and I went home with a dulled broadhead. If I had it to do all over again, I would have let down and either let her walk or scared her off while attempting to turn my sights off.

Great lesson learned!

That sounds like one of my encounters

Cool adventure even without bringing one home.
