If you really want extended battery power, get one of these. I have the model for my D300 and it's well worth the money. In addition to being able to use rechargeable AA batteries, the grip also has its own shutter release making it a LOT easier to shoot in portrait mode.

The extra battery grip is a huge plus on my D7000.

It never comes off. If I run low on power, I just slip the tray in that is set up to run off double A's as Scotty describes.
