Thanks for the kind words! We will be out there again this weekend to try to shoot a couple more deer and plant some more trees. Will post some updates after this weekend.

Shot the crappy 8pt this morning. We have pictures of him over the past 3years and he has had the same set of antlers. I think he was post mature. His knees were all worn down

Default Update - 12/10/2020

I will be planting another 6 trees next weekend on the other side of the ranch so we will see how they do. I purchased a 275-gallon IBC tote that we are going to use to help water the trees. The trees don't really need much water right now but we will need it come summer time. We will use this to fill the 7 five gallon buckets and eight 15-gallon ooze tree tubes as well as help water the other trees. I'm going to purchase another IBC tote and build a wildlife water trough. We will use one tote for now and then possibly look at adding another tote later on.

This tote had mineral oil in it so it was very easy to clean out:

We still have 2 buck tags and 5 doe tags left, here are the bucks we are after:

I think we got 0.2in, according to FarmLogs. The first one is a 4yr old and the second one is a 5/6yr old. Probably just going to shoot the older one and let the other 8pt go for one more year.

Has anyone spray painted these IBC totes? I was looking at Krylon Fusion spray paint but after researching there are a lot of people that say the paint can leach through the plastic and to not paint them. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Just want to make sure the one we use for a trough doesn’t get algae inside.

We picked up 2.32 tons of cottonseed today from the Mereta Cotton Gin. It's almost double the price this year and the best price we found was just under $300/ton, but it's still a little cheaper than protein. We converted our trailer into a storage bin and purchased a HD tarp that goes over top. We will start filling up our cottonseed feeders this weekend.

We put out around 1,200lbs of cottonseed today. They are hammering the protein and corn right now, not much native forage to eat.

I was able to put some cages around a couple trees. Going to need to put a cage around all of them before they are growing out of the tubes.

Now itís time to relax.

Here are some of the bucks we look forward to seeing over the next couple of years:

For 2020, we fed over 30,000lbs of protein. We really hammered the deer herd this year and will shoot all of our whitetail tags (11 doe and 5 buck) along with 4 blackbuck doe. The lack of rainfall has really caused the big increase in feed consumption. I donít think we have gotten over 1/4-1/2in of rain in over 4 months. Hopefully we will get back on track with rain in 2021.

Great looking deer. We are feeding as much as we can to help them. It’s a race when they hear us putting out feed and when the feeders spin. Where are y’all getting your protein? Bulk? We get ours in town

Wow, goes to show that if you put time, effort and some $$$ behind a wildlife and habitat improvement plan you can change your herd.
Awesome to see the difference from 2015 to now.

We get our feed delivered from Brady Feed. We used to fill them ourselves but not we have Brady Feed fill them up which actually comes out to around the same price since we are buying in bulk instead of by the bag.

We are hoping to keep the protein amount around 20,000lbs yearly but have to get our numbers balanced first and continue to improve the habitat and receive some rainfall.

We got 1.2in overnight. Hopefully we will get another 1-3in today. This is the first 1/2in or more of rainfall that we have received since September 9th. We are hoping we can get 2.5-3in total as that would help tremendously!

Everything helps moisture wise. Sadly, it takes 10" of snow to equal 1" of rain

Wow! I had no idea! It's still pouring out there so I bet we will end up with 2.5in of rain and then maybe an inch of snow when it's all said and done. Whatever moisture we can get, we'll take it. I'm just happy to know we don't need to water the trees this trip.

Default Gleaton Chip Ranch Updates

We ended up getting 1.9in of rain and 2in of snow so around 2.15in of total precipitation. We needed this badly!

We are still after that 8pt cull buck and another doe for this weekend. Will provide updates. Setting all the raccoon traps tonight. We caught 5 raccoons two weekends ago.

Here are the feed totals for 2020:
Protein - 32,350lbs
Cottonseed - 5,800lbs
Corn - 10,400lbs
2020 Total Rainfall - 21.5in (2.5in below average)

We hammered the deer herd and blackbuck herd this year to help lower the feed bill and seeded 15 acres of native forbs and grasses. We still have another 3 deer to shoot. We are going to try to lower the amount of corn we are feeding and use that $ toward more protein since corn doesnít offer as much benefits as protein or cottonseed. With our post season deer counts I calculate that we should feed around 20,000lbs of protein, 6,000lbs of cottonseed, and 6,000lbs of corn for 2021 but it all depends on rainfall. We were on track to feed around 24,000lbs of protein this year but we didnít get any rain for nearly 3 months so the deer didnít have many acorns or food plots so they hit the protein a lot harder this fall. We are hoping to remove another 10-15 acres of cedars in certain areas and will experiment with the cedar blanket treatment and see if grasses and forbs respond quicker than dozing.

I try not to add up all the things I put into hunting, then thinking of the pounds of meat taken.
I always tell the kids to eat up and enjoy because its probably the most expensive meal they will eat.

Would you say your herd benefits the most from the protein or cotton seed more? Overall body health and antler growth being considered. We are low fence menard county off Waddell.

They both have their place but if I had to choose one I would choose protein pellets. I believe protein pellets have a lot to do with the overall health of our deer herd. We are seeing bucks dressing out over 150lbs, which is really big especially for our area. Cottonseed is great and is more cost effective but it doesnít have the micro nutrients and vitamins. We like to feed both just in case an older buck is dominating a protein feeder then a younger buck, doe, or fawn can eat out of the cottonseed feeders and still get something to eat.

We donít paint ours at all. We make a frame with 2x4ís around the top middle and bottom. Then we attach 6 inch cedar fence pickets to that just like a residential fence. Then make a frame for the top and skin it with corrugated tin. We have also done them in corrugated on the sides as well. Both work great and have had zero problems with algae. Your place and deer look great. Let me know if you need pics and I can get some next time Iím at the ranch.

Thanks! Iím hoping to buy another tote so we can use one as a water source for deer and use the other to water the trees as well as fill the tote water trough.

Default 1/16/2021 Update

We were at the ranch this past weekend. The deer are hammering the cottonseed and protein. We cranked our timed protein feeders up to feed around 10hrs per day. We noticed that we got another inch of rain last week so that was a good surprise. We went ahead and watered all the trees and noticed that all of the trees still had their leaves. We added a couple of new water stations throughout the property and will put a 275-gallon tote on the two 50-gallon Rubbermaid troughs. We will put these two troughs inside our feed pens. We already have two concrete water troughs that are solar powered (one in our southern half and one in our northern half), a large 2.5-acre pond, and a 1-acre pond so adding these 2 other water sources should give us plenty of water for the animals. We just like the idea of having a water source next to the protein feeders.

I hope to purchase two more of these 275-gallon totes next week and have these set up by February.

Default Cool Picture

Here's a cool picture of a 4yr old 13pt (10-pointer with 3 kickers off his browtines). We are excited to see what he will turn into in a couple of years.

Default 1/22/2021 Update

I purchased a Covert 2020 Code Black Cellular trail camera that I am looking forward to trying out in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, here are some pictures from the past month.

Have you seen any of your deer drink from your 50 gallon trough you put out yet?

We put a camera over them so I should have some pictures to share over the next 2 weeks. My parents are out there and said that the troughs are both down about 5-inches so something is drinking from them. I'll keep you posted and let you know once we get the camera cards.
