    Fly Fishing for Trout

I grew up here in Dullstroom South Africa and started learning to cast a fly line in 1982 due to my dad's passion for fly fishing for trout.

I did some research recently on the history of trout in Southern Africa as trout are not an indigenous species to Southern Africa.

The 1st pioneers in the trout industry attempted to import trout eggs from Scotland in 1875 but were unsuccessful.

However a few persisted and in the mid-1880's the 1st fingerlings were stocked in rivers around the KZN Midlands and the Cape Town district and the trout industry was born.

Due to our water temperatures and the lack of flowing streams and rivers we do not have many places in the country where trout can breed successfully thus trout need to be stocked from hatcheries in most of the country where trout will survive in still waters and streams.

These are generally found above 6 000ft above sea level and higher.

Fast forward a century and I was bitten hard by the fly fishing bug and have casted a fly in quite a few different waters around the world.

Next year February the World Fly Fishing Championships will be hosted in Dullstroom and I am looking forward to meeting a lot of flyfishermen that is just as passionate about the sport.

Our rain season started late this summer but the past weekend we received 3 inches of rain over a three day period.

So early Monday morning I decided to go to one of my favorite still waters in the area to go and see how the fish responded to the inflow of fresh water.

I can’t get the link to work, but interested in watching it. I love fly fishing, just don’t get to make it happen that often.

Same here, can't get it to open. I've made a couple of trips to the mountains, and enjoy the small rivers of central Texas. Have really taken a liking to glass rods in the 2-4 wt category. Looking forward to getting a glimpse of your home waters!

Great little video, I use the exact same TFO rod... Who knew they had trout in SA, and even more impressive was that Brown, very cool.

Great video, congrats on the fly rod trout. Makes me want to go trout fishing right now. I also have a TFO rod, 4/5 weight. Good and versatile rods with awesome warranties.

Out of curiosity what reel are you using on that rod? And are you happy with it?

On the 5wt I have a stealth reel.

I have sold more expensive reels in the past and have kept the reel.

I really enjoy the Stealth reel.
