    Plot seed sale at TSC

I usually keep an extra bag of plot seed set aside for any bare spots in my fields. This fall I planted all I had and most is coming up real well, but I noticed a few bare spots that needed over seeding.

I stopped at my local Tractor Supply and they had all plot seed mixes on sale at some good prices. The advertising on the bags was killing me:

I bought 25 lbs of some sort of super powered rye/oat mix with natural enhancing Viagra affect clover mix for 9.99.

Also picked up 22 lbs of Big Buck Hard Horned turnip/rape/radish mix including a new variety of estrus wheat, on sale 11.99.

I reckon 47 lbs of plot seed for 22.00 aint bad, I'm a little worried to plant it. Especially if them bucks eat that Viagra clover and me sitting in a pop up blind.

I don't know about those seeds Jeff, the clover leaves may be too HARD to eat. If it works, you may need to put some plywood on that pop up..........

Only junk if you are in an area with good natural forage. I hunt in the pine thickets of SE OK and put out rye grass in some of our small clearing 2 years ago. Those rye patches stayed green and held deer all winter in that rocky area where the green briar gets browsed heavily. This year I did a mix of oats, rye, brassica and clover with one small plot strictly clover. This is the first year the clover has really taken thanks to the rye providing cover for the seeds. We have done bean mixes in the spring but they are hit so hard on our small plots they don't last long. So far the oats have come up where mixed with the rye also. It's tough to plant on timber company land as we can't clear anything but trees the timber company deems nuisance.
Rye was a cheap way to hold deer and provide more nutrition than the local forage provided in our area.

Perhaps rye grass but definitely not cereal rye which is a grain similar to wheat. There is a big difference.

Back to the original topic, the TSC in Sealy has a whole display of marked down deer hunting stuff including some seed mixes without rye.
