Poultry is by far the most frustrating project the kids have done in 4H/FFA. Look at a list of kids who have placed top 10 in Houston and San Antonio the last 10 years. You'll notice a lot of the same names and the same 4H/FFA chapters over and over and over. Going by the Purina or Producers' feed plan can get you a good bird. Getting a great bird requires something that 99.9% of people (including me) will never know. The winners are all taking it to the grave. You have to be in the feather mafia or lucky to have one or two of those ag teachers that know the trick.

FYI, this news comes from an A&M Poultry Science grad ('94). My classmates have won them all. And never shared a peep.

We had some success mixing cooking oil with feed and putting it on top of the regular feed. They'd eat it fast. And as others said, if they're up, they're eating... get em up.
