I started this island a loooong time ago. Anyhow, we had a double trunk cedar tree in our backyard that was beginning to split in half at the base that needed removing. We milled some of it to make the top for our island. The previous island was 24” x 32”. The new one measures 34” x 60”. Had to put the island base in the house and paint it in place and put the finish on the top out in the garage. I put 3 coats of Waterloo Finish/Sealer on it to give it a semi-gloss finish. According to the folks at Waterloo, I should be able to shower on top of this island and never have a problem with water as long its not scratched through or damaged. I picked this finish because if it does get scratched or damaged, I can lightly sand the area and another coat to fox the troubled area. For storage, I wanted to have enough space to fit all the kitchen do-dads without taking up cabinet space and it worked! Barely!!

We made a mess making biscuits and bread on it yesterday and the Waterlox finish made cleaning very easy. Water drops bead up on it and don’t soak in.

What you should have done was build real nice cabinet and then put a really cool countertop on it...wait....You did that.
Turned out fantastic! |

Nice project and use of space in the island. I am currently building cabinets for our butlers pantry/utility room and wanted to use pecan live edge for the tops but got overruled by the mrs. We are going with a white concrete like we did in the kitchen. You can’t argue the beauty of wood especially cedar. Great job.
![]() Speaking of cedar I might just use some in my gun/safe room. Have a family friend that lost a good sized one from Harvey in there yard. I need to go cut and bring the trunk to my shop and mill it into some usable lumber. |

Like other things, marriage is about compromises. Talked the Mrs into using piece of pecan i milled for a desk top to break up the white counters. Currently working on the cabinets and will maybe make a post when finished.
