Default What to do w/a Javelina Skin

This may not be worth much if you're not a bowyer but I'm gonna post it anyway. My buddy makes bows and told me that javelina hide is great for backing bows. I told him I'd supply the hide if he'd let me help. These are the results.

1st we fleshed the hide. This is what it looked like beforehand.

This is the gland they're notorious for.

I didn't get any pictures of us fleshing it or directly after. Yes, I'm a slacker.

Next we took some mesquite ashes and mixed with water.

Soaked the hide in the bucket for 48 hours (if I remember right).

Then we began scraping the hair off of the hide.

Nailed it to a board to dry and then began sanding.

Cut off the rough edges and made strips.

These strips are then used to back bows like this.

My buddy's the one with the talent. I just helped. I've been meaning to post this for a while but didn't want to start until I knew I could post the whole thing. Didn't want to go the way of the bobcat thread.
