Timm, just curios... When you restore one, as in new paint and such, is there a special color paint Coleman used?? Like the J. D. Green and yellow... Or do you just get as close to original you can. |

I have not messed with the 200A red because I only have one and I like the way it looks now. I have repainted stoves and lanterns only. It's pretty easy. Now the paint will only take so much abuse before you have to shoot it again. The nickel plated 228D is getting polished, but not repainted. I've decided to use it after I got back from Colorado elk hunt. My only working lantern (I brought three) was 1941 242B. My 288's would not light at all. Brought them home and they worked fine. Must have been altitude sickness. ![]() Have fun with it and don't be afraid of taking them apart. It's pretty easy. If you need help just ping me. Last edited by 2050z; 10-28-2015 at 09:16 AM. |

Here is a 51 (1964 model 220E) year old font that I just finished repainting. I used Rustoleum Hunter green and two coats of clear. I bake the paint for about an hour at 200 degrees in an old toaster oven.

So, I don't know much about them, but from what I have seen it looks like maybe that is a 1948-1953 model? That is the original old style tank, correct? What is something like that worth? I plan to keep it, but just curious...

Value is based on what the collector is willing to pay. Probably a couple hundred bucks if that is a working stove. Just a huge guess though.

I kind of figured in the 100-200 range. Doesn't really matter though since I am keeping it, but I was curious. It is probably going to take a bit of work to get it running, I need to start by cleaning everything out good and then go from there. You got a good link on how to rebuild one? I figure I will just strip down all the valves, etc and clean them good, then try to fire it up.
The pump is stuck, and the main tank valve is froze up, but the valve for the second burner moves free. Tank probably needs to be cleaned too. Seems I read something about soaking it in vinegar for a few days? |

I use Metal Rescue to soak the parts now. Take the generator off tank and clean/soak it. Be very careful pulling it apart because there is needle at the end.

I have never messed with a tank like yours, but you should be okay. is there a model number and date code on that case? |

Well, I just screwed it up.
I went to Old Coleman Parts and was using his tutorial, pretty good. I went to remove the valve from the tank, it was stuck pretty hard. I was twisting on it, and instead of the brass fitting coming out of the tank, the metal boss in the tank itself spun. So I guess the tank is ruined now. Unless I can get someone to braze it back. I used to do that in the Navy, I know it can be done. It will ruin my paint though, which I was hoping to keep original. Everything else cam apart fine, and was cleaning up real well. Only thing on that case is Coleman, 425, Wichita Kansas. The video I saw said it wasn't until much later they started stamping dates on them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2TmTDvqdSU Here is where the fitting spun. I should have put some heat on that thread locker to turn it loose. ![]() |

So I got on the Coleman Collector forum, and a guy had done pretty much the same thing on a tank that looked just like mine. He had soldered a new fitting in his. So I busted out the torch and silver solder that we use doing the piping inside tanks, and went to work. First time I got it a little crooked, then I had to heat it again and straighten it up. But it is back in, everything is back together, and it works fine and is all sealed up. I tested it real well.
I am back in business, minus some factory paint I really wanted to keep. But I guess I can just re-paint the tank and not mess with the green case. I would like to leave it alone. They talk about the tanks on these being bronze, but mine isn't bronze, it is a brown with no metallic in it. 99% sure that is factory paint too. I guess I willl just match it as good as I can and spray it. ![]() |

And now that I have destroyed the paint on the tank...
I have looked and looked for another one with a brown tank like that. All of the round tanks like that are bronze. Except I found a picture of ONE that wasn't bronze, but brown. The caption on it said "probably from late 1947 or early 1948." So, maybe I had one from the very first year of the 425, in good shape, and boogered it. Where is that banging head on the wall emoji when you need it? I still think I will just go ahead and repaint it. I won't be selling it anyways. The valve handle was messed up too, you can see where it is just brass and not the plastic wheel. So I ordered one of those from Old Coleman Parts, as well as a new generator and filler gasket. |

It will serve you well for years. I have one shelf queen stove. It's brand new never used three burner with all the paperwork. I have that never fired lantern above but I plan on using it.
I got carried away collecting this stuff, but now I only go after certain ones. I will get a heat drum for my 502 stove and a couple more accessory trays for the bigger lanterns. Last edited by 2050z; 10-30-2015 at 05:23 PM. |

2 burners and double mantles is what we had growing up. I have one of the lanterns. Not sure what happened to our stove, but like most it was probably sold at a garage sale.
Might have get a that heat drum in a couple of weeks. I am going to calm down on collecting for awhile. I need to finish my birth lantern, 1948 228D lantern, and 413G stove. I need to start making the Coleman boxes for the kids. Each kid will get a stove and two lanterns. My oldest wants the three burner and the other two have picked the 413G's. They have not decided on what lanterns because I keep getting new ones. ![]() |

No, I didn't because some of it was froze up. The air pilot valve was fine, but the needle valve on the generator was stuck. There was some light rust in the fuel tank too, so I decided I would clean it up before I tried. It looks like that valve was not original either, so I ordered a few parts from Old Coleman parts. They came in today, so it is time to go to work I guess. The case I will just clean good and leave alone. Burner parts and tubes I may leave alone for now, or I may throw them in the blast cabinet and blast and paint them. Not sure. Mainly, I have to work over that tank, get the junk out of it and get the new parts on. I may just fire it up from there and see where I am at. |

I need to run by mothers house and get Dad's old lantern. I think it is probably an early to mid 70's. I think he had my grandfathers old lantern too, it was older than that. I just need to see what is there and go from that point. Dads should be in good shape, it might be in running condition as-is.
I'm going to start work on the stove tank tonight. I went by the hardware store and got a few things to get me started. The tank is dry so I think I will start with shaking some small screws in it, using a magnet to get them out, blow the rust out, then maybe a vinegar soak for a day or three. As soon as it is clean I will blast the paint off in my blast cabinet and shoot it with some brown that I think is about right. Then I will bake it in the smoker I use for curing Cerakote. I have really, really thought about Cerakoting that tank instead of painting it. Burnt bronze would match the typical color for that model very well, or patriot brown would be really close to what it is now. |

Well Timm got me all fixed up with a new stove and gave me advice on how to get my old lantern working again. Had positive news on the condition of the lantern and got it lit tonight! This lantern, the hissing and the smell of burning campfuel brings back memories tracking my first deer with it and countless nights fishing for crappie under the bridges.
Thanks for all the help Timm! These 2 will be put to a lot of use feeding my friends and I in the duck blind |

Those are some nice items there Ultralight.
I had to swing by mothers last night to put license plates on her car for her. I found Dad's fishing lantern, but forgot he had broke the globe on it fishing one night. It isn't quite as old as I thought either. It is a 220K from 3/81. Other than the glass though it is in pretty good shape. It will pump and hold pressure, and hiss when I open the valve. No rust in the tank. I bet it will fire up with some mantels and a globe. My grandpas wasn't right there with it, I think maybe it is out in the shed or something. It may take some digging to find it. |
