Default Weird genetic traits

Have you ever come across weird genetic traits in a small local population?

I have 2 separate spots with odd traits that are common there, but nowhere else nearby....

My Father’s property has a high prevalence of deer with double white patches on their necks. I never though much of it, just a thing in the area and something we used to identify potential offspring of specific does and/or bucks.

I noticed this year, however, a doe group with exactly 50% expression of another anomaly I don’t think I have seen elsewhere.... white patches on the backs of the ears. It is almost like these deer have evolved “white flags” for when their ears are alert. This is a doe group of 8 does and fawns combined and exactly 4 of them have the trait. It is not a “lighter” patch, or a bare patch... it is a stark white patch.

What do y’all think about this? Normal, or odd????

Any pics of deer without it? As I sat in the stand this weekend, I noticed the same white behind the ear on a few deer. As I looked closer at all of them, they all had it.

Let me try to transfer pics from my computer... the other 4 didn’t have them at all.

Okay, apparently I don’t keep many pictures of does or deer looking away with ears alert... but, here are a few I found paroozing through.

I did find examples of some white behind the ears in most places I hunt. But absolutely nothing as stark white and defined as the doe group posted in the first post.

Deer in our area have the double throat patch and a few have the white ear patch, some have a white dot on the ear. Some bucks exhibit short brow tines, I mean short, like less than 2 inches. Even different coat colors. Trait differences, absolutely. Evilution? Think not.

We have 4-5 bucks running around our place that have a split G2's on both sides. Pretty cool gene to have around.

I chased a public land buck like that this year.
It made him a NICE 10.
