what does it say for our speckled trout management/pressure, that freshwater lakes(oh ivie as a recent ex) are still breaking weight records and the worst freeze on the coast in 32 yrs failed to produce dead trout 12+ lbs like the freeezes of 83/89? one could even find documentation of several 15lb+ trout found in the 83 freeze. i know with the record number of anglers targeting trout, the trophy fishery will never be as good as it was in the mid 90's to 2003/2004. i really miss catching 10-15 trt every year over 27".. i'm lucky to catch 1/2 that many now, and i hope i've gotten better over the yrs.
all good things must come to an end.. so, i'll pop a top for all you guides, the real fish killers!!! |

I still catch 10-15 trout over 27” every year, probably double that. But I agree it isn’t close to what it used to be.
Edit: not on croaker either. |

I don’t really follow. The 83 freeze was the worst in modern history. It was colder and for longer. It would have killed more fish

As you have gotten better over the years, so have the guides.
Those who take out 2 groups of clients a day to limit out on croakers aren’t going to practice CPR like us weekend hacks. The next few years will be interesting to say the least. |

I just hope that the pressure on the fishery is reduced. The increase in fishing pressure on the middle coast over the last 30 years is astonishing.

Basically it all comes down to either police yourself and respect the resource or others will feel obligated to do it for you. It’s always ALWAYS the few that ruin it for the rest.

Lol, 90% on the guides I see at the cleaning table only have 3-4 reds, a couple drum and a trout or 2. Their clients leave with a smile even after getting azz raped for $700.

Two weeks before the freeze i witnessed something horrible in south bay. We where in the channel fishing and every cast was 16-19 inch reds. A guide boat came blasting in and power poled in about 30 yards away. We had 40 fish landed under limit without a keeper. The guide boat was full and they fished for 30 minutes loaded up and took off.
I understand making a living but these guys really don't care. Pack the cooler and make their next boat payment. I follow the fishing reports from multiple guides and all off them are down playing the fish kill.. Business as usual i guess. My brother which is a huge fly fisherman is not going to keep a fish for over a year. Hopefully a overall sportsmanship approach to the sport picks up speed and our waters can recover. Personally i would like to see TPW step in and institutes a zero limit on trout. |

Wow. How about we all take a deep breath. The sky isn't falling. All the fish aren't dead and all the guides aren't evil. I know a lot of guides and not one of them is a bad guy, they're guys that like to fish like the rest of us. Trust me they're not in it for the money. This to shall pass

I will have no problem keeping enough trout for a meal or two. If you feel you need to let them all go, that's your prerogative. Those of us that love to fish and keep a few will. Heard cca is talkin about cancelling STAR. What does that say about them if they don"t. Buncha hypocrites
Bet a bunch of those whining about wanting 0 kept, support them. |

my boat has had a 100% trt over 22" release rule for a couple of decades. i very rarely keep trt, partly b/c i love catching them, and partly a 21/22 red fried/half shell/blackened is so much better.. i don't call that 'giving back', it's taking less... i could name dozens of people who fish all the time and throw freezer burned trout out all the time... that, is a big problem... and while we are at it, hopefully txpwd will start actually showing up when they are called, and give some tickets, that a judge will in turn punish someone for a change. i too, hope txpwd helps the trout get to trophy size..
tx just wouldn't be tx w/out it |

Haha. OP would have a stroke if he fished with me. I’ll take my one over 25” every day I fish if I get it before I get my limit. I keep the first 5 keepers. Do you let 7 yo deer walk so someone else has a chance at them? By the time that fish is 25” it’s lived it’s life. Killing those little fish is killing tomorrow’s trophy trout. Lol

Guides and tournaments support coastal communities. They bring in folks that eat out, stay in hotel rooms, stop and buy a cap or T shirt at the gas station and might even buy some stuff to take home.
Skeeter- when was the last time you went fishing and spent $100? I know I dont unless it is for fuel to run offshore. I dont pay for lodging, grill at the house, and even if i go bait fish offshore ive caught that in a cast net. |

Maybe if you would have let loose some of those fish in all your pictures there would be more fish. The real issue is fishing pressure. There are so many more people fishing today, and there’s nothing you can do about it. There are 3 things you need to know to be successful in saltwater, when, where and how. That information is easily and readily available now, where you used to have to figure it out on your own. Fishing pressure is increasing and people are better at catching them. Not to mention the croaker soakers.

Some of you would poop a brick at the limits of fish brought into the marinas in Louisiana by guide services. 25 trout and 5 reds per man happens often.

I don't care what anybody does but yea it is nothing close to what it used to be.. It is what it is.. The number of fisherman and the number of shallow water boats scarring up the bay floor, running through prime fishing water day in and day out, has played a huge part in the decline.. The big fish that are not caught are HIGHLY pressured..
For you fellas that are commenting that live 5, 6, 7 hours away, and haven't lived this for 30-40 years like some of us have, let me assure you that these days it is a full blown circus down here on the coast... Like I said it is what it is and its only going to get worse.. I'm just glad I was here to experience our coastal fishery during the early 80's when catching numerous 28"+ trout was the norm.. In 1983, before the freeze, I caught 8 trout in one day that were 28" or better, wading Cold Pass.. I knew old salties who chunked Mirror Lures in the surf that caught stringers like that on any given day when conditions were good.. Those days are long gone.. Can you imagine if they didn't have a 25 fish dink limit?
I've fished over that way a handful of times. When the guide gets pumped over a 22" trout it says something But you'll never get a coon ace to agree with that. They will always say texas sucks and where's my hoop net? Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk |

There is more pressure now than then. We had a place in matagorda and spent all the summer holidays down there. You wouldn't catch me doing that now. But, it's pretty common to see the same boats running around in circles. Cause they can't fish Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk |

Jiminy I don’t understand people trying to tell other people what to do when what they are telling them not to do is perfectly legal. With all the bad shiz going on in the word we are worried someone may keep legal fish from a legal fishing trip they paid hard earned money to go on!!!
We have had bad fish kills in the Texas bays going back centuries. We will have them for centuries going forward after we are all gone. It will take a while but it will come back just like it has before. Good Lord folks!!! Everyone needs to take a deep breath on this! |

The population of Texas now is almost 30 million people. In 1990, 30 years ago the population was 17 million people.
More pressure on a resource, plain and simple. As many trout were killed during the freeze i wonder if it would exceed the fish brought to the cleaning table over 1 season? |

Got another salty one.
Also, Louisiana inshore fishing is awful. I hate how crispy you can fry a 12" trout. I highly reccomend saving your gas money. |
