My boys and I usually make 6-8 trips to our lease in Childress between September to January. It takes one tank there and one back at $150 a tank.
$300 x 8 = $2,400 for gas! It flipping makes me furious to think about it! We will definitely be shaving those numbers down as much as possible but I hoping to not let it affect our over all season. |

Nope. Deer hunting is the only thing I do so I’ll spend whats needed. It doesn’t hurt that my lease isn’t too from my home though. Perhaps if I hunted in Childress it might?

I don't think it will during the season, but it has in the offseason. I normally try to go about every 3-4 weeks and so far I have been keeping it at about 6 weeks

It already has had an effect. I haven't been since December. Normally I would have had protein going hot and heavy by now. Between protein prices and fuel costs, I just can't justify the cost. I may only make 1 trip during the season. Two at the most.

Honestly things are so tight right now I had to give up my spot on a lease a few weeks back. The owner understood and said whenever I’m ready to comeback to let him know. My blind and feeder sold within minutes to another Hunter….

Things have not peaked yet and likely won’t for a while. More than likely I’ll go more often so I can stock up on pork although my place have very few on it. By the time the season rolls around I bet the answers to my question a month or so ago ( is there a breaking point to feeding wildlife) will be significantly different.

Corn is gonna get scarce. Fuel prices effect everything. I expect lease prices to drop next year for the first time . I'm afraid things are about to get serious.

Headed to S Padre with the fam this summer. I usually take the 4 wheeler and trailer in order to take all our stuff back and forth from the beach. I figure my truck gets around 10 miles a gallon with the trailer…it’s about 1400 miles round trip. Did the math, gonna cost me $700 for the trip if gas hits $5. Haven’t even factored in going to get the dang thing at my property.

I've cut back on trips to the lease this offseason to basically nothing. However I'm actually going to go down on Friday and pay our landowner for our lease (I take everyone's money with me). Guys on the lease asked if they need to pitch in a few dollars on my gas. I hated to take anything at all but everyone insisted because of how high gas is. Probably won't go back until September. Cost me around 200 dollars in gas right now (there and back).
Not sure how it'll play out during the season as far as my trips there. Gotta buddy on my lease that usually rides with me during the season so that will help out as we usually split the gas. |

Probably won’t fill any feeders, so I’ll use that money for gas.
The one that’s really gonna hurt is our annual trip up to Kansas for opening weekend of pheasant season. That’s usually 3 tanks to just get up there. But if other people back out, then I may not go at all. Biden sucks!!! ![]() |

It'll mean less protein and sweet feed this summer and less trips during the season for me. I usually hunt every weekend from bow opener until rut is over. I'll probably plan on staying longer per trip instead of many short trips.

How many trips up there are you making? $3,000 divided by $5/gallon is 600 gallons. At 15 mpg that is 9,000 miles. I just drove from Fort Worth to Chattanooga then Nashville and back and I was in it for $450 |

Hoping the Nov midterms have the Demo-rats dropping the price of fuel to try to win votes ….. “see what we did for you?”
With the drought out west, horns are going to be down even though we are feeding protein so the motivation to be there every weekend I can, won’t be as strong. Gonna be longer but fewer trips with strategically taken vacation days. Don’t have kids so we’re able to do a Wed through Sunday type trip or a week long trip. Drought out west plus, high fuel and feed prices have my local pig hunting looking more attractive this fall. So my hunting days might not change but the specie might. |

Trying to figure a trip to Wyoming out in October. Last year we flew to Denver, rented a truck and drove the rest of the way. Southwest was $120 roundtrip and truck rental was about $600.This year airfare is about $300 and rental truck is about $1100. If we drive it is about 2500 miles roundtrip in a diesel truck that gets about 15mpg. Thinking might wait until early Sept to make a decision.

We’re worried about hunting and there are hundreds of thousands that can’t even afford the gas to get to work much less meals.
We have definitely slowed our roll and as much as I love hunting that is a want instead of a need ! |

It's appears most people are cutting back on driving at least to some extent. I know I am. It seems if this is the trend nationwide the demand for fuel would be diminishing somewhat.
Before I retired I drove 500-600 miles a week (in DFW traffic). Now my truck leaves my shop about once a week on average. As far as hunting I am fortunate that I can walk out of the shop to most of my stands or drive the Ranger to stands that are farther away. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk |

Most years it wouldn’t bother me. My lease is just 30 min up the road. Corn will be a bigger factor than fuel for me.
But this year, my brother and I are booked to go to 7J again in Wyoming Sept 7-12. Took me two years to save for everything. Its going to cost us several hundred more dollars each in fuel to get there and back. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Yes it will. I hunt public land only, and am very aggressive moving between properties all over southern Oklahoma and north Texas based on wind conditions and spots I think may be best for them.
With prices like they are, I will probably not be bouncing around from property to property this year. I will instead pick the property I feel has the best wind directions at the beginning of the week and stay with it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

$260 in diesel to run down and back to fill protein feeders on Saturday. 625 miles round trip with running around the ranch included, paid $5.39/gallon on the way out. It stings and it’s gonna get worse fellas. FJB

On a side note, there is no question that it has impacted the boat traffic at all my local boat ramps. Going to Sabine pass this time of year usually will have 20+ trucks in the parking lot. The most I've seen this year at one time was yesterday, and it was only like 8 trucks. Last edited by breederbuck33; 06-20-2022 at 09:44 AM. |
