I hate gout. Just today, I can fully walk on my right foot without pain. 2.5 weeks of gout in my right bottom big toe. 2nd bout I ever had. Got it near my left ankle a year ago. Took 3 weeks to get over that one. Went to urgent care as it was so bad! They thought I had a bad pinched nerve until foot specialist said gout. I guess I better get with a dr for meds to be prepared for future. Seafood got me this last time. My best friend has it bad and steroids help him the most he said. This is all new to me so learning to help prepare myself cause it is awful pain if you've never experienced it before.

That Indocin (indomethacin) will absolutely stop an acute attack, but man......that stuff is hard on me! I used to take colchicine (colcrys) but it got to where it wouldn't have much effect on a sneak attack. Prednisone still works pretty fast and so does prescription strength naproxen.

I am just getting over an attack myself. I have had it off and on for about 15 years and I also suffer from Kidney Stones. My doctor tests my uric acid levels every year when I have my annual physical and says I am within the range it should be so they never would put me on Alipurinol.
I do keep Indomethicin on hand and take one pill three times per day when I have a flare up. I have yet to determine exactly what triggers mine but if I could determine what that trigger is I would stay away from it for darn sure because it hurts like crazy. When I get a bout of it, it really hampers me from wanting to do anything. Mine is always in my left big toe.
I did not know how common it is, I always thought I was just the chosen one to deal with that crap.

My triggers are wild game (mainly pork), shrimp, alcohol. I'm screwed. =)

For me it's more of a genetic problem.

I had gout so bad last April I couldn't walk for a week. Couldn't put on a sock or even let the bed sheet touch my foot. That episode was so bad that my middle toe was permanently disfigured.

It went away days later when I got a steroid shot and started allopurinol at 100mg. Took it everyday for 7 or 8 months. Now a few times a week based on my diet.

Steak, shellfish, lamb, and beer makes gout flare up the worst.

I do eat cherries now when in season. Dried work too. Tart/pure cherry juice helps keep it at bay, but does nothing during a flare up.

Do not take aspirin for the pain. It limits your body's ability to remove the purines.

Purines are the cause and your body cannot remove them without producing uric acid.

Beer doesn't have any purines, but when you consume beer... removal of the beer becomes the priority and you will get behind on removing the purines in your body.

            Best of luck!!!

I take an Allopurinol every night. No issues. Its not just for gout also to get the Uric acid out so help keep kidney stones down too.

                Yes. Agreed.

Wild game is richer than beef and will highly accelerate production of uric acid. Elk and lamb (type) game is the worst.

Both of my Dr's said beer, wine, and dark alcohol are the worst for gout. Keep it clear. High quality clear for relief if you need it.

Daily Allopurinol here. I would get it in my ankles and one time in my knee. Worst was when I got it both ankles at the same time, impossible to walk. I let my RX for Allopurinol lapse one time and thought I could manage without and that was a bad decision. Had one of the worst flair ups ever after about 4 months. Went back and got on it and haven't had an issue since. Dr. said that was common place.

I used to take allopurinol but quit and started taking the dark cherry extract pills and they seem to accomplish the same thing for me. I also quit drinking so much beer and that was my main problem.

Been taking it for past 3 years or so. No side effects I’m aware of. DR told me it was a safe medication to take, been around since the 60s.

I’ve been on 300mg of Allopurinal for at least 8 years and have no problems. My blood count and numbers are perfect everytime I go fir a checkup.
Be very careful with the Indomethacin though. My doctor told me “do not touch” the capsules and don’t take over one a day for no more than five days then stop for 10 days.
Indomethacin is a “only use as needed drug”.
It WILL cause stomach bleeding if you take too much.
But, I’ve never had to take over three days of it to clear up my gout.

One other note..... stay away from red meat and shell fish and the gout will manage itself.

This isn’t the case with everyone. Vodka was/is my one and only trigger I can identify. I miss Vodka in the summer months.
