A couple years ago I took a shot in the dark and hired a catfish guide on Lake Fork. I wanted to take my wife fishing where she could catch some fish with no pressure, especially from me.
![]() So that brings us to here. I chose a guy based solely on his posts and pictures on the Texas Fishing Forum. I was not disappointed ! Better still, my wife had a blast ! So we did this trip every year when she got out of school for the summer for a couple years. Last year we added her sister to the party and again we had a great time. The Sis is from ND, as is my wife, (but she’s been a transplanted Texan for forty years), and has never fished like this. This year when she was planning her visit she wanted to fish again so naturally we agreed. Our trip today was great ! We met Shannon at 7:00 AM and were tied up to a tree by probably 7:30 or so. The morning was cool, we had a light breeze, and the fish were active. By 11:00 AM we were packing it in with a three person limit. When the fish were filleted three one gallon bags would barely hold them. Gonna be some great eating ! I highly recommend Shannon if you like to catfish, and especially if you have a kid or wife that would enjoy a good fishing trip. His number is 903-987-2315. The bait used was Stubby’s Cheese Bait and I can’t say enough about it. It’s clean to handle, with no smell that has to wear off, but the cats love it ! We were literally letting it go to the bottom, turning the reel handles two to three turns, and getting bit ! I’ll bet I missed half as many as I caught, and I caught a bunch. I have no affiliation with Shannon or Stubby’s, just recommending a friend and a great catfish bait. They say a picture is worth a thousand words……… Last edited by Drycreek3189; 06-28-2022 at 08:13 PM. |

Nice haul? That’s a big bucket of dip/stink bait (if that’s what she’s holding).

Thanks guys ! Probably the best thing about this is how comfortable it is to fish on a pontoon boat, especially for an old fart ! No step up or step down and extremel safe for the ladies. And……he even has a place for them to pee !

Congrats on the awesome trip. I’ll have to look into the Stubby’s bait. We have been using Mr. Whiskers cheese punch bait. It reaks and gets all over our hands when handling the line but the fish really love it. Would much rather something thats not as nasty to handle. We have been hammering them on Conroe. These are from multiple trips

As much as I love saltwater I can never turn down some good catfishing. It’s what I came up doing. Rod and reel, limb lines while camping on a river bank, and running trotlines. Love it all.
Only thing that’s changed is I’ll let the big girls go but if it’s a “eater” It’s in the box |

We live at Fork and have a camper in the same park as Stubby and Shannon, the park you fished out of. I will only use Stubbys bait these days due to how well it works and the very noticeable difference in smell between it and it's competition. The Fork eater cat are pretty easy to figure out this time of year, just find some 20-30ft of water at the mouth of a creek in the trees and drop the range cubes. After that wait about 30 minutes and they will come flying in. Hope yall get to have several fish frys out of that trip.

Great haul right there. It's very relaxing. We hired a conroe guide for me, wife, BIL, SIL and had a blast. Drop some range cubes, go catch a few crappie on structure, and then come back and hammer the cats. Great day.

Those cats look great. Here is probably the best kept secret place that, after much reflection, I'm willing to share only with the Green Screen.
Lake Waurika, in Oklahoma. Only one guide on the lake (call the marina to get hooked up) and there are cabins to rent at the marina. Went in October and caught limits of 10 each between 3-5 pounds and then he hooked us up on big ones 25+ that we caught and released. Going back in August to catch saugeye. |

Heck of a trip!! Langdon won a catfish trip once at Fork and I was impressed with the Stubbys cheese bait. Could ball it up with your fingers and wash your hands when you were done and your hands didn’t stink for days!!
Good job!! ![]() |

Man, I had a pectoral fin in the palm of my hand a few years ago. It was so deep I had to cut it out with my knife. All I had for any kind of first aid in my little flat bottom was alcohol pads to clean glasses with. After I cut it out I squeezed all the fluid out of several pads on it then scraped some slime off the catfish and rubbed that on it. It never gave me a minute’s trouble other than the standard wound. I heard old folks say that the slime thing would work, but that’s the only time I ever had to try it, (thank goodness). The fish flopping with that fin buried and the knife part was not fun though. I’ve been very careful how I handle one of
those little catfish ever since. I also put a first aid kit in my boat ! ![]() |
