    Curly Neal dies at 77

Sad to see one of the original Harlem Globetrotters go. He was a legend!

Fred "Curly" Neal, who played 22 seasons for the Globetrotters and was just the fifth player of the organization to have his number retired, has died at the age of 77.

He was one of the all time greats, always a pleasure to see him play.

He was not one of the originals, the Globetrotters started in 1926, Curly joined the team in 1963.

Sat beside him in first class on a plane from MSP to MCO, signed a picture of himself to my son. Pulled out a ball from his bag and gave us all a show for about 2 minutes. Wish I would of had a phone that could take video instead of a flip phone. He was very cool to talk to.

Part of getting old is watching your childhood heroes pass.

                          RIP Mr Neal

I remember seeing them play as a kid at the Monroe, La. Civic Center. Those were fun times.

It is impossible to explain to younger folks how big of a global icon the Globetrotters were back a few decades ago. Curly - in addition to being an extremely talented player and entertainer - exemplified the fun and joy that was the Globetrotters. Saw them several times in the 70’s - always a great time
