I like this idea but wouldn't work if you hunt out of pop-ups on the ground.

works perfectly fine for my pop ups? Fence is 24"tall after you roll 10-12" down my bucks and bigger does almost can just step over it.

One month & 12 days to go.
My 12 year anniversary falls on the opener this year so I’ll spend it kayaking the upper mountain fork catching ditch pickles on vacation.
Group in my backyard are hammering the protein still.

Pulled my card for the first time after a late start on getting camera out 3 weeks ago. Bucks are hitting the sweet feed hard up in Houstin County. I'm still trying to decide if this 9pt is 4. I didn't have a camera out last season because they were thinning timber in my area all summer leading up to bow season so I can't pinpoint which buck he is. His genetics are common on our place.

Nice.

Surprised that big boy made the jump.

We use 52” cattle panels cut in half so just over 2ft, it keeps all but the occasional big boar out

As usual “Main Event” showed up hard horned and right in time. At 8.5 either the freezer or his age in the deep sugar sand hurt him bad… I was expecting him to trash up, for last few years and he has gotten smaller last 2. This year is a main 9 barely with a gimpy brow. He’s very huntable now, but I don’t think I’ll burn my 1 tag on him. Lola might get to do the honors and that would be very fitting, since she should have killed him 4 seasons ago.

New player is a 9 I passed countless times last season. He EXPLODED this year to a pretty unique buck, with kickers and stickers! I named him “Kaboom”. He is where current focus is

Got it. I think thats what I should have done too.

Man this our 4th year using them and so far they either haven’t figured it out. There are also plenty of hunters around not using pens so they have easier options available too

“Main Event” has officially entered the property this morning. 100% identified!!!

So now I got to make a choice…. It’s personal between us, so I’d really love to kill him @ 8.5

Have a couple good groups of does at one place I hunt, No legal bucks, except for 1 spike. They are all TALL with hardly any width, great looking deer but genetics I think are keeping them tight.
Having some mulching work done at another property that has had some good deer in the past (I haven't hunted there in probably 3 years), no cameras out yet until they get done. Should be a couple decent ones there.
I'll probably be hunting some does at one and trying to get lucky at the other this year, but should have 2 good spots next season. Man, I'm getting excited. Season can't get here fast enough.

My dad’s Rusk Co deer from last season back from taxi. In the Texas Big Game award official score ended gross 168 net 162 & 5/8. I’m not sure if y’all will remember but he didn’t have the best pics that did the deer justice. Nice to get confirmation from the official tape measure! Hope his brother and offspring are running around this season. Good luck to all and hope we are setup for another great year in east tx.

I guess we are procrastinators lol. Been saying we were gona get feeders and stands up for 3 years but we just keep hunting at my inlaws in Houston County. Now that my daughter and son-n-law moved back from North Carolina we are supposed to get it set up this next spring. I really don't know what the quality of deer are in the area. I need to go put some cameras up. Lord willing, that'll be where we retire one day.

Last week I moved 1 camera onto a trail I found in February that had “Main Event” on it daily. Wellllll… that closed the gap 200 yards!!!! And get him just after dark. Main an aggressive move today and moved all cameras out of core area even more to determine his route and circle of feed pen. It would blow most hunters minds the distance I have him circling a non hunted bait pen anyway. If you sit on bait for him in bow range and get wind “right” … your still busted. Lol

“KaBoom” is still a regular especially very early… 5:30am. This place is typically non huntable early season. They bed on it everywhere and you just bump too many

Bucks can hold to a pattern so tightly that most biologists ( if they’ll be honest) can’t even understand. I have a feeder on a pipeline that I feed all year long. 200 yds downhill of that feeder is a creek that always has an active trail that parallels the creek. 2 years ago I started hand Corning along the creek and set up a camera and there were numerous bucks traveling along the creek hitting the hand corn. But they would never come up the hill to the feeder until the rut started. And then they would stay around the feeder all season long. Same pattern this year. But that’s why they call it hunting.

Within the last week and a half our bucks rubbed their velvet and bachelor groups broke up. Buck activity at feeders has really dropped and there are several bucks I haven’t seen since then. Is this pretty normal for East Texas?

Yes it’s normal and you’ll start seeing new bucks showing up in your area.

Seeing this as well.

Looks like the most mature buck I had showing up has not been there in a week.

Hoping he shows back up....in 17 days....in the daytime...

Seeing several new youngsters.

Hope his brother and offspring are running around this season. Good luck to all and hope we are setup for another great year in east tx.

I remember that deer from last year because I loved his look. If I remember correctly ya'll were thinking he was only 140-150? I remember looking at the picture and thinking he was mid 160s all day and that I must be missing something. I think I might have even commented on it but that was over a year ago so i could just be thinking that. Anyways, congrats to your dad on that great deer again.
