In the Spring of 2018 we started to work on the lower wall uprights and the window opening in the in the bedrooms under the Loft.

We also added the back wall framing and east wall framing. We painted most of the base and uprights. (Pic1)

then we decided to add a wrap around deck to the East and West sides of the cabin. On the west side, which is the main entry point there is about a 6" stepup to get onto the deck. We made the side decks 4' wide. On the East side there will be a 2 step stair way leading to the deck right at the side entry door for easy access (Pics2,3,4)

We also added Gussets to all the 90's on the first level. (Pic5)

Mid July was the last time we worked on the cabin. On that trip we began working on the roof rafters. We got all the rafters above the loft completed; and then the wind kicked up. With it being so dry it was not safe to be welding so high up because of the fire hazard. So we decided to work down low. (Pic 1)

It was time to start working on the shower house. We had not planned on doing that on this trip but we had the tools and went for it. First thing was to cut in the door opening. (Pic 2,3)

We wanted to have a nice view in the shower so we cut in a window on the north side of the Silo. (Pic 4)

We welded up a door frame and attached the cut out sheathing from the opening to the frame. then used 2 hinges to mount the door to the Silo. (Pic 5)

On the last picture you can see the door and Window of the Bathhouse. you can also see the handrail on the deck . We plan to use cables going horizontally through the beams as cross member so we do not spoil the view. (Pic 6)

I was very skeptical about using it because i wanted the look of a traditional cabin but as soon as we put it in place I got really excited.

I really wish it wasnt taking so long to get done, but when you only have about one weekend per month to work on it; its gonna be a long build. It will be worth it in the long run!

Definitely a different approach to building a structure. What made you decide to use sq tubing over something like a purlin for most of the walls/roof?

As far as remote building I am doing the same thing with about 70 miles between locations, yes it sucks and takes alot of time.

The reason i choose to go all square tubing is because we had alot of extra and or free materials that my friend had.

We plan to build a “cantina” in the area to the east of the cabin, in there we will build it with purlin most likely. That build is going to look like an old saloon or general store. I havent decided. It will be the main hang out area with a 2nd story deck for star gazing. I hope to have that done by the 2020 deer season.

I am 175 miles from door to door. It takes about 2.5 hours to get there so we have to plan ahead and try to use long weekends to get as much done as possible.

Yes! I am not looking forward to that but I guess that has to be done at some point. lol. I have thought about using inner 2X4's for the walls so that I can attach the plywood tot he 2x4's and just have to screw the 2x4 to the Metal studs. I don't think I am going that route but that may change.

You can shoot the 2X4's onto the steel with a ramset if you don't mind the mule kick, and the additional thickness of the walls.

Thanks for all the comments. I wanted show the little bit of progress we made this hunting season on the cabin.

Last year I did not hunt the place at all; so this year I thought that I would at least get some hunting done. I had a pretty nice 10 point coming to the feeder so I wanted to try to harvest him. I installed anew tripod blind in the trees behind my feeder about 10yrds from the feed pen. I hunted a few times but he did not come out Saw lots of deer, does and young 8's mostly. I did end up harvesting a spike for meat with my bow at 15yrds.

Now back to the build. Rain this year has been crazy. Every weekend we planned to work it rained. On the weekend of Oct 20 we braved the flooding in the area and started working on getting the roof rafters completed. My brother in law came with us to help out, and it turns out he is a pretty good welder and was not afraid to climb around the open cathedral ceilings of the cabin to weld. We do have a very tall ladder that would reach, but constantly moving that ladder around proved to be inefficient. We managed to get all the main cabin roof rafters in place before the rain came that weekend. While the rain came pouring down we decided to start clearing out the cedar around the cabin, for the yard. We cut out what had to be 300 cedar bushes and burned.

What we had left at that point was to paint the entire structure, & install the roof rafters over the front porch. After that we can begin putting on the roof, installing the Deck and skinning the sides.
