In!...hope to see some creative tool organization ideas. I rarely work wood, metal is my poison, but still have tools everywhere.

I hate shelves because i just end up cluttering them and never cleaning. This way they are removable if i change layouts. |

That's pretty neat. I like the idea of being able to change it around as tools change. |

I like that cleat idea posted about for power tools. While working in the oil field the shop used a peg board and outline or traced which tool went where. So you could physically see what tool when where and if something was missing from the board. Similar to this.

Kevin--I wish. My shop is tiny and with all the machines in it, very little room to move around easily. Also has a 6.5' ceiling which I'm always poking with boards. Smaller shop has one advantage though--keeps you from collecting/accumulating too much wood, and is quicker to clean.

Does anyone use the french cleat system currently? It seems like it would be great, but I also have a tendency to over-complicate things. I'm afraid it would take years for me to get it where I want it to be.

I don't use the French Cleat to the extent that the video shows, but I do use it to hang cabinets in the shop, and I also used it in the 2nd bedroom to hang a twin headboard above a queen-sized bed. It is so simple---for cabinets, just take a 1x4 and rip it down the middle at a 45-deg angle. Put one on the wall and the other on the back of whatever you are hanging. If you screw it up, just flip one of the pieces and refasten.
Can be used to hang heavy pictures as well--and if you pay attention to getting things level, won't ever have to worry about a cock-eyed picture. |

You guys inspired me to organize my tool box a little...just used a router to cut some slots for my wrenches. If anyone has a better DIY system for this, please share it before I do the others

Still getting mine all set up at our new house, but there was something that the previous owner had built and left that I really like and have been using some already. I'll try and get a pic of it soon. It's basically a square base with a round top built on it. On top of the base, he mounted caster wheels upside down that the round top rolls on. I have 4 different power tools mounted to the top (band saw, sander, grinder and drill press). Whichever one I want to use, I just slide it around and am good to go. Simple, yet ingenious.....

YUP^^^ and best thing is you can mark the wall pcs every 16"s and then get one screw in on the side or center somewhere and then just run down the board sinking screws in. This works really good for heavy hanging stuff. Like shelves etc. |

My woodworking skills are not up to par to even attempt something like that.
Does this setup work well for say sliding drawers or shelves? |

Dust collection is done(except for grounding, yes i know that is important)
Went with the rockler dust right system for the small tools and the table saw/bandsaw. I am not a fan of the hose for the small tools, it is heavy. But the rubber ends are nice. |

I've finally got the floor space that I wanted, but right now it looks more like a storage building than a shop!
![]() We had all of our household stuff in three 10x20 storage units, until we were ready to move into the barndo. Unfortunately, the Westpark Tollway expansion thought the new road was more important than our storage, so we had to move it all out by the 15th of this month. Now, it's all in my shop! This is looking from the "garage" into the shop. This is looking from my north door, into the shop. On a positive note, I got a nice rack to organize my wood! ![]() The bottom tier is filling up with milled mesquite! ![]() |
