Just looked online to see that I wasn’t selected for a gar tag and wanted to see if anyone else on here put in and got selected. This is such a joke

          That's stupid!

They grow faster on the Trinity than other rivers...So why the heck restrict them there?

          Is it the entire Trinity?

How/way do they grow faster on the Trinity than other waters? Serious question

No one should put in for that tag. You can still go catch them with a rod and reel over 48" all you want just have to "release" them. If you want one to eat then just keep one under 4ft. Still alot of meat. Do not encourage the stupidity of the TPWD.

Edit: This law only pertains to the Trinity river. Brazos/Sabine/ and few lakes still have big gar.

Each river system is complicated. The Trinity is unique. The more a river floods (or rises/falls) the better gar breed, eat, live. And the Trinity flows better year round than most other rivers.

For example the Colorado above lake Buchanan dries up some years. Big gar can't fall back all the way to the lake. The Nueces has dams (Mathis, Choke, Three Rivers) to stop them. Plus the river doesn't flow enough year round.

There are other factors also like nutrients in the water which grow bait fish.

I'm not a gar expert. I just understand them somewhat because where there are huge gar there are huge catfish

Yep the better eaters are the smaller ones. Catch Picture and release anything over the 48in.

Another law with no biological basis hits the books because the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Pretty much... just as posted in another thread... when it comes to TPWD, just follow the money... they're no different than just about any other appointed gubment agency.

Running lines in the river for catfish will become more and more difficult with so many gar swimming around.
