What is everyone’s fall food plot plans? I haven’t firmed mine up yet but I am thinking a cereal grain base of wheat and oats, with some red clover and daikon radishes and maybe some winter peas. I have read mixed reviews on the winter peas...

We are going straight oats. We planted a mix last year but there were so many desirable natives they only touched the oats and rye. So this year, all oats.

Shredding this weekend, soil samples sent off for fertilizer requirements. I will spray in a couple weeks with a 3% gly solution. Wait till mid October, sling fertilizer, light disc (1-2 inch deep), broadcast seed and pray for rain. This year will be Elbon Rye, radish, turnips and another field of BOB Oats and winter wheat.

The deer at my place love young sunflower plants, they ignore everything else till the sunflowers are mowed down to the bare dirt.
I planted 2 acres each of sunflower, milo, millet. in late summer for doves. When everything got 3 or 4 inches high the deer hit the sunflowers like a turbo charged lawnmower, after the sunflowers were gone they went after the milo, never touched the millet. |

![]() I quit planting Elbon rye and wheat or oats in the same plot. That elbon rye will take off and choke out everthing else, I kinda figured I was wasting money by plantings wheat and oats with rye. Elbon rye is pretty good stuff and drought resistant but them army worms will gobble it up quick. Last edited by Radar; 08-29-2019 at 11:10 AM. |

Already started my plot prepping. I have mowed all the plots and am in the process of "raking" the plots to remove the thick layer of thatch from the mowing with a skid steer and root grapple. I will next apply Glyphosate using a 6' boom sprayer in the back of our mule at a rate of 2oz per gallon. In 2 weeks I will come back with our plot master and prepare the seed beds. I will follow that up the next week with planting all the plots in winter wheat. After they have been planted I will use a manual spreader and top the plots with a clover blend and then run just the culitpacker over it to ensure good soil contact.....At least that's my plan for now.

We've been using Turner Seed's "fall deer mix" the past 11 years (on 20 total acres of plot). We also sprinkle in Pogue's clover/turnip/radish mix. It's been fairly consistent for us. Army worms have been awful the past 2 years though...
We typically shred/spray, then no-till drill into that thatch a few weeks/month later. I am bulldozing 5 new acres this weekend though. Hoping to maybe deep disk it in September and throw something on it before the freezes. I kind of want to experiment on the new plot with something besides Turners mix. Thinking maybe just straight crimson clover and wheat? Don't really know what wheat to plant?? |

I’ve got ~17 acres turned over at the house. Will plant wheat, clover, and turnip combo. Already have some really good clover (for this time of year) established in the hay meadows.
Started bush hogging over at camp and I’m hoping to get about 20 acres planted over there in the same mix if I can get done with the mowing. It’s got plenty of clover and lespedeza as it is, but would like to get some good green plots in for hunting purposes. |

I plant a pretty big variety....Turnips, Radish, Crimson Clover, Elbon Rye, Wheat, and Oats.
I may try a little Triticale this year just out of curiosity. I planted my turnips and Radish on Monday just before the rain. Last year I planted everything around the middle of September and the brassicas never got big enough to grow bulbs.... so I wanted to try them a little earlier this year. I'll plant the cereal grains sometime after the 15th whenever there is rain in the forecast. |

I mowed last weekend and I’ll be planting next weekend. I’m planting a 1 acre plot in Tecomate Max Attract and a 2 acre plot in Tecomate Monster Mix. I’ve never used either seed before but I’ve had good success with some of their other seed.

We’re shredding this weekend, and getting everything prepped. Plan to plant my mix in a few weeks, and pray for rain. Going with wheat and a few bags of wildlife mix, and then top dress with clover, after I drag the bigger seeds in. Running late this year with my prep work, I’ll disc in some pelletized lime before planting. Once it starts to sprout, I’ll hit it with some fertilizer.

Sprayed last weekend and will shred and disk this weekend to get the seed bed ready. I was thinking of getting some seed thrown this weekend too, but it looks like everyone waits till Mid Sept to start planting.
I tried my first food plots last year and just as it started to take, all the rain came on flooded me out till this summer. I picked up 2 bags of Super Buck Mix from my local hunting store (Native Outdoors) that has Wheat, Oats, Winter Peas, Clover and Rape in it. I also picked up a bag of just Winter peas. I have about 3 acres to plant. I'm in Ellis County. Should I wait a couple of weekends to plant? |

I need to get out and shred this week, my bigger and newer plot will need to be sprayed as well.
Gonna do a mix of plots but most will be plot spike oats(buck forage if I can get some local) and a mix of peas, clover and turnips. My deer really liked the dacon radishs and turnip greens last yr. They don't touch the actual turnips tho. |

Got my plan finalized. Standard till and plant in the sanctuary. Going to try throw, roll, and spray method at my clearcut spot. I have some vessy/Johnson grass that is 6-8’ y’all so hopefully it will create a good seed bed. First time trying this method on a fall plot. Both of these spot are right at 2 acres each.

We just planted a little over 2 acres worth of Tecomate Max Attract a couple weeks ago. It is a mix of Peas, Clovers, Chicory, Cereal Grains. We complimented this with a 13-13-13 fertilizer.
It is our first time planting so we are curious to see how it comes out! |

I have been mowing and spraying plots, have about 45 acres of scattered food plots on the place.
I do a mix of 90% wheat and 10% elbon rye at 100# per acre rolled in with a top dressing of purple top turnips 1# per acre, dwarf rape 1# per acre, Daikon radishes 1# per acre and 5# per acre of crimson clover. Mix has worked well for the past 6 years in Rusk county. |
