That profile looks a whole lot like the old handmade Persuader crankbaits...maybe not so much the paint LOL! Those were fairly expensive baits that got more expensive after being discontinued, I have a couple somewhere.

That's great. Back in college I had a couple buddies that would fish farm ponds with me outside Stillwater on the weekends. (yes they are called ponds in Oklahoma) One of our gags was to build increasingly ridiculous "Frankenlures" and see if we could catch something on them. I would take an old plug and add a giant lip, multiple spinners long tails, fins, googly eyes, etc and paint it some garish color. They almost always caught fish - those unpressured farm pond bass would hit anything. My favorite was one I called the "Zippity Dootter Wiggle Scooter" - it looked like nothing found in nature but I caught a 5lb bass on it!

                              That is cool. (and Fun)
Get him to do little things like drill a hole and add a few BBs, then cap hole with epoxy or something, so it rattles.

I did it for about a month with pinewood derby cars scraps.
Caught a fish on 'em and quit.
Here is a crawfish I did that has clackers for the claws. (for example)
