I plan on going the 2nd week of archery elk, semi guided.

Dang..... sure would like to know wish units those were. We haven’t drawn elk tags In New Mexico since 2012. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with NM....

Lots of private land in NM that you can get landowner permits... might cost you a bit more, but will allow you to plan a for-sure hunt. If you do archery in either CO or NM, go as late in the season as you can... If it's a rifle hunt, go as early as you can...
On both, stay as long as you can, and try to get thee 3-4 days prior to the hunt and get into the high country and spend all day there to pre-condition yourself to the altitude...
There is NO amount of training that can acclimate you to the altitude... Being in good physical shape is VERY important, but the hunt will go so much easier/better for you if you have already spent time at altitude... If nothing else, go to RMNP and hike/sight-see, anything to exercise at or above where you plan to hunt... Makes a BIG difference, otherwise, you'll spend the first 2-3 days huffin' and puffin' as you acclimate while on the hunt... makes hunting harder and less enjoyable...

In CO I‘m a fan Of week before ML season. Less pressure, bulls are shadowing cows, and big bulls are still patternable.

Back half of Season to me is to much pressure and bulls just talk but don’t play.

In NM, I’ll take what ever week I can draw.

                            Full moon on the 20th.
Therefore, the week of the 20th will be full go rut.
I like the week of the 13th. Wont be near the bugling action, but, you can successfully call in more silent bulls that are trying to round up their harem.
