                picture is real

the discussion came up about the Axis\Whitetail cross, there are no axis in the area.

we think it is just a fawn spot pattern that stayed this year

full body mount was brought up

appears to be close to 13" wide

Hybrid would be my guess as well.

Some whitetails never lose their spots, but it is fairly rare. Pretty cool!

Pretty cool. Just like melanistic or albino, it is a genetic variance. Not sure whether would be heritable to next generation or not.

My cousin shot a buck in junction we (unprofessionally) aged at 6.5 that had a similar thing going on. The spots weren’t as pronounced as that deer but he had 6-7 visible spots on his back. I’d at least have to tan the hide

After closer look it is whitetail spot pattern. Pretty neat.

is that a fawn or a yearling?

That's at least a 3 yr old buck probably so I don't see him ever losing the spots if he hasn't by this age.
