I've tried several things and caught coons on all of them but always come back to using corn. Its just too easy and not worth the mess of cleaning out your traps from the fish, marshmallows, etc. Ants don't bother the corn either.
This is what we use. We also spot light them at night once in while. You would be surprised how many you can stack up spot lighting them. We are going to do it this weekend. Im gonna try my thermal on my 17HMR as well and see if we can get them that way.
The best bait is floating fish food pellets that people feed their stock ponds with. It smells like cat food, but it doesn't degrade when it gets wet. It's been working great for me, and I just dump out the old bait rather than having to scrape it out with a stick.
When I first started trapping coons I used corn & dry cat food mixed together with a few drops of fish oil poured on and caught a bunch. After running out of fish oil I continued to use corn & cat food and still caught a bunch. although I continue to use corn & cat food mixed together with good success. There have been times that I have forgotten my coon bait when at camp when running traps and rebaited with straight corn out the feeder and had similar success. I have tried marshmallows and they worked but in the summer they get gooey.
I like corn & cat food because it is easy and convenient and works but I think just about anything would work as others are having success with many different baits.
