They hold up well.
If you want to step up, Stradic and don't look back. 2500's are plenty for what swims in the bay. I've found new BG's and Battles on eBay well under $70 at times.

I got my first spinner last year for long casting popping cork work. I've got big hands, and I tried the 2500 series reels, but the bail would whack my knuckles sometimes so I went to the 3000 series and it is just barely larger but big enough to work for my hands. I got me a 8 1/2 foot light action/fast tip rod and I can cast that sucker a mile!! I got the Shimano Stadic and it has served me well. I'm sure the Penn's will work as well as many others... I've never been a spinner fisherman because of issues I had a million years ago with line twist on 'em, but when I got the new Shimano, I watched the you tube videos of putting line on spinners as well as casting techniques and I'm now a genuine expert!! (even though I didn't stay at Holiday Inn!) Good luck!
