Buddy shot buck, what’s up with his neck fur?

My buddy shot this old buck tonight, his fur on his neck is really in bad shape. Anyone have any idea what is going? Old age or skin disease

He does have a wound on his cheek. Most of the herd has gone to winter coat a month back as we are up in the panhandle.
