    Attracting Axis?

We hunt a place that is on the edge of a part of the hill country where there are axis. According to the neighbor, they've only seen one in 20 years, but there are populations within 5-10 miles.

What can be done to get them to come over and visit lol? Alternatively, what can be done to increase the chances of seeing one in an area with limited population?

Protein and sweet feed. (horse and mule) worked for us up above Boerne.

All stock pellets from tractor supply. It’s a 12% protein sweet pellet

We have been running 1/2 protein 1/2 corn in our feeders the last two seasons, but don't feed year round.

Axis move around a lot. There’s exceptions but normally they don’t pattern as well as whitetail.

            Chaffa hay (spelling)
            Or alpha hay

Water would also be a key ingredient.

Water and pellets or sweet feed. They love corn of course, but will stand in line for sweet feed.

If you have water sources and don’t graze your property too hard. They should make their way to your area. In my experience they are sensitive to pressure.

Maybe the lack of water is relevant.

We had them less than 500 yds away from our home in Fredericksburg and tried Everything for 11 yrs . They just wouldn’t cross a valley!

                      Water, alfalfa, and low pressure.

Axis are pretty interesting. My in-laws have a few acres mostly consisting of hillside. Down low by the house you rarely see axis. But less than a mile down the road the fields are full every night. I decided to place trail cam up on top of the hill and wouldn’t you know the axis regularly pass thru up there but wouldn’t go down the hill 75 yards to the house/feeder area.

They stick to cover during the day and browse at night. Often grouping up into large herds.

                              Buy an Axis doe.

They also love Alfalfa, rice bran, all stock sweet feed.
