    Hybrid Knife Scales

I haven’t posted on here lately, I'm so busy I quit taking custom orders several months ago. I concentrate on selling at least one knife a day. Lately I’ve gotten in to casting my own handle materials, mostly with cholla cactus, and pinecones, I’ve done a few live edge wood hybrid scales. Handle materials are expensive enough as it is, especially Hybrid Scales, so I decided to start making them myself. Here are a few I’ve done lately.

Those are really nice. I really liked the look of the pinecone scales, but I stopped using them because they're not very solid. Or at least the ones I used weren't. I don't think the resin gets into the pinecone enough.

Those are beautiful, though! Have you tried prickly pear? I've seen people make gorgeous handle material out of that.

BTW, I understand now why you like making Bowie's so much. I made one recently (my second ever), and I got more enjoyment out of making that knife that any knife I can remember.

Those are gorgeous, Bob! I'ma sucker for blue. And those pinecone scales reek "Buy me". I'ma try-n to re-strain-n my self!

Having said that, there used to be a feller at the Ft. Worth Gun show that worked with that cholla almost exclusively with all kinds of knives; folders, double folders, fixed blade, ect. And I always enjoyed his work. Just never could afford it. . But you dude, got it kick-n with that yeller n cholla, and red n cholla!

                        .
Sam I've tested my pine cone scales and they do just fine. It all depends on the epoxy used. I use Alumilite Clear Epoxy Resin and put them in the pressure pot over night. I also stabilized whatever I cast, can't take any chances. I sell over 300 knives a year and I can't afford any to come back.

I think the pressure pot must make the difference. I suspect the ones I made were just done with vacuum, and no pressure, so it didn't get good penetration.

Also, I kind of like the outside of the cone to be on the outside of the knife instead of the inside. I made one knife that looked like a fish. The pine cone looked like fish scales. It was pretty cool.
