    Tree identification

Just bought some land and I’m in the process of clearing it. Anyone have a good chart or some source where I can identify which trees I want to keep? I have a big variety.

Which trees would you mulch , which trees would you keep?

The tallow trees are all going.

Be careful clearing out scrub brush/etc. under mature oaks, some don’t take to well to it.

Take your time to make sure you are knowledgeable and accomplishing what you want.

      Fixing mistakes can take generations.

A big mistake a lot of people make is razzing all of their young oaks leaving nothing to replace the big ones as they go.

Get "Picture This" app, it works pretty good by just taking pictures of leaves or bark

Found this out the hard way on some of mine. Crazy it doesn't bother some and then others die. Lost at least 20-30 nice oaks by clearing cedars out from under them

How much shrub undergrowth was there?

Mulching alone, be ready for the tallows to resprout with a vengeance for years. Highly recommend chemical treatment first.

In Brazoria County, oaks are likely your most valuable trees.. (Live oak, water oak, willow oak, etc.)

Apps like picture this, iNaturalist, and Seek can help ID plants by leaf shape.

Just driving back and forth around some oaks (especially live oaks and post oaks) will set them back or even kill them... Buddy of mine in the Columbus area put his house way back in the back of his wooded property... just made his driveway winding through lots of big mature oaks... I bet in the first 3 years, he lost over a hundred! They don't like the ground to be disturbed around them...

Got a close up of the leaves?
                          Looks like soapberry.

The bark resembles the Ash tree in my front yard. Can't see enough detail on the leaves
