Black smoke means it is running rich to much fuel. Start with the basics, air filter (These get filthy on a mower) new spark plug, and never hurts to change the oil. (Oil is not the cause of the running rich.)

I assume you added good fuel, nothing that sat and is old same with what was in the tank prior.

If it is fuel injected, there is a fuel filter somewhere that needs to be changed or cleaned. Especially if it has a 116 hours on it.

You didn’t happen to mow on a steep incline? I have done this before going sideways on the incline and smoked like a blown motor until it burned off.

I think you found your problem. My Kubota was running bad the first mow of the season. The plugs looked like yours. New plugs and oil change and it was back to normal.

That would explain the carboned up plugs. Change them out and you should be back in business.
