I asked my wife just this morning if she'd rather have a CZ and a pile of cash or the diamond on her finger and no cash. She said if she had it to do over she'd take the CZ

Check out white flash or union diamond online. Literally half the price of Houston jewelers and fully certified.

I went with union diamond and it was excellent service

When I bought my wife's I used JamesAllen.com can pick your setting and then pick the rock. And the price was great compared to in store pricing.

Jonathan’s did an awesome job on our engagement ring and it was a great deal compared to everywhere else I looked. Sergio or Keifer will help you out, I needed mine in a few days and they had it finished early.

Don't be scared of buying online if it's a well known and certified place. Blue Nile and James Allen are very reputable from what I found, and I had a good experience getting the rock there. You can always get the stone online and get it set somewhere else local if you want. I was looking for a rather uniquely shaped stone, so it helped to have a huge selection to pick from, and was about 30% less than buying at a jeweler.

Checkout moissanite engagement rings. My wife got a moissanite engagement ring and a diamond band. I told her she could get a diamond engagement ring but she knew she'd rather get something a little more affordable and use the cash for something else. Smart woman .We looked a moissanite rings and diamond rings side by side and could not tell the difference.

Blue Nile and James Avery, as already mentioned.

JA lets you view the actual diamond under loop power. I had a great experience with Blue Nile and everyone I know who has used them or JA has had great experiences.

Look for codes online, Blue Nile usually has one.

Good advice, when I bought the diamond I didnít use a store
I used a whole sale dealer , paid $8000 and wife went to get insurance and replacement appraisal was $15000 (2001 dollars)

I used Sergio at Jonathan's for my wife’s ring. I was so pleased that I got her a diamond bracelet from him this year. Great guy and will walk you through the whole process. He answered all of my questions and spent time to educate me so I could make the best decision for my needs. No pressure at all. What really helped was for him to lay the diamonds out and compare different sizes color/clarity. Even had me take them outside to see them in natural sunlight.

I couldn’t have asked for more. It is nice to have someone who knows what to look for. I highly recommend using Sergio!

I highly recommend Eternity By Yoni. He gets them straight from the Diamond Exchange in New York. The Diamonds have GIA report. Find a couple you like and he will go look at them and give you his opinion. You have a couple days to return. I went and had it appraised the day it came in and the appraiser was surprised what I paid for it. https://www.eternitybyyoni.com/

Save your money and buy the man made/lab diamonds and avoid the greatest scam since the early 1900s. If a woman tells you she needs a diamond for you to express your love to her you need to keep looking. Just my 2 cents. And yes I have the money to buy real diamonds but whatís the point?? To impress others?? Majority of people go into debt for a ring at a time when that money could be better spent on a house down payment, etc and not add to the stress of being a newlywed....

When I was shopping I contacted one of the reputable stores up in New York, good old gold. Got a good deal on a nice certified diamond with a custom setting that I otherwise wouldnít have been able to afford. They were great to do business with.

Default Engagement Ring Advice

If you have a Robbins Broís near you, you canít go wrong with them. Customer service is unbeatable. Free cleaning for life. Any time my wife decides her ring isnít sparkly enough, she swings by and lets them deep clean it. She probably does 4-5 cleanings a year.

Here is what I did. And you will get a lot of recommendations, however, I shopped around A LOT! Go to Hoffman Diamonds in Houston. Heís kinda down town on the 12th floor of a high rise and is a direct diamond dealer. He supplies diamonds to multiple jewelers all over. And the best part, he sells diamonds to consumers for the same price. Absolutely the best prices hands down. And has no shortage of diamonds in every cut and every size in ever clarity and every color. You know your budget, and he will show you any and everything you want to see in that budget. Plus, he has just about any setting you could imagine. Or he can make what ever setting youíd want. I promise, you will be happy and you wonít get a better price. My wifeís uncle owned a jewelry store and was a jeweler when I proposed and he wasnít able to match the price. He was very close, but still couldnít get that low Bc of what he was paying for the diamonds.
My wifeís ring is a hearts and arrows round solitaire set on a six prong band with diamonds. Itís triple excellent certified through the GIA and laser serial coded. Itís the same diamond and setting sold at Tiffanies. I paid HALF!!! of what it sells for in Tiffanies and to back it up, it appraises for double of what I paid for it. Only catch is they donít finance. So you either buy it on a credit card or pay cash. Also, forget any kind of haggling. His price he gives you is it. There is no wiggling or anything Bc itís already well below everyone else. Including anything you find online. Remember, I shopped, A LOT! Feel free to pm me any questions you have.

Also, last piece of advice, ignore the haters with the donít comments or run or be prepared for blah blah. I truly couldnít be happier. My wife amazes me constantly and goes well above and beyond for me and my family. And her family is just as amazing as her. If your girlfriend meets all of your requirements and you 100 percent know that she will make life better in every facet, then buy her the ring you want her to have and marry her! Just be sure to never get to busy for one another and always remember to live life! Have fun! And donít ever stop dating her! My wife and I are best friends and hunting buddies and Iíd never trade one day of hunting with her for a week with any of my buddies if it really came down to it.

Lake McGuire. Do a quick search on here for him. I looked for a long time at diamonds and working with him was very easy. Got a 1.7 carat diamond for a price that was un beatable by any jewelry stores.

Ron White: Diamonds...that’ll shut her up...for a minute

I used Blue Nile 15yrs ago, and it was all legit and up front. The stone appraised for a little over 2x what I paid. The thing I liked about online shopping is that you can compare many different stones all at once and pick the one that matches your preferences best. And none of that “ooh la la” crap they try to sell you in the store.

If they ask what you do for work, tell them you’re an engineer. They’ll quit bul****ting you with 3 different salesmen, give you an inventory list and leave you alone to compare numbers for an hour, LOL.

Get the biggest one you can possibly afford. I went with a wholesale diamond broker out of NY that a few friend had used. I sent him a pic of what she wanted and he sent me back option A thru E (E being the biggest and most expensive) I went with E and it sucked to spend that kind of money but you only have to do it once. She comes home several times a week telling me about some new compliment she got and it was worth every penny.

Also get ready for the entire thing to make you feel like you got a deal when in reality you didnt. It will go something like this with just about all of them.

Spends 10K
Appraises for 20K
KICKER: If you were to realistically sell it the day you received it he could probably get 5K for it. Those ratios should remain pretty good for most of em as long as you stay away from the big box retailers.

Clearcreek is right. I would also add that all diamonds have serial numbers. You can buy one right out of the ground "new", or a "used" one that has been in circulation for a while. I went with a used one.

Congrats on the step.
Don't buy more than you budget for (i didn't follow that rule) and know whatever you spend its about like a car and those things depreciate like crazy. So even more of a reason to not drop a ton of money.

I used Lake and Randy with Simply Radiant. It was all over email and the phone and they did a great job. Lake has posted on here a few times and was very helpful.

Once again DONT SPEND MORE THAN YOU BUDGET FOR!

Just a few thoughts as everyone has an opinion on engagement rings.

- IMO Cut and Clarity over size for the center stone. I think a 1 carat that is nearly flawless (VVS1 - VVS2 range) looks better than a 1.25 or 1.5 carat that is a few notches down the clarity scale; although the price point may be similar.

- If you go with an independent, be sure to check references. Diamonds and gold can be a pretty shady business. Many would be surprised to see the backgrounds of some individuals that have even solid reputations. They also like to quote "wholesale" prices and brag about how bad the big box stores rip you off, but these guys have mark-ups too. The savings isn't always as much as they want you to perceive. With that said, you can definitely get a better deal going this route if bottom dollar is your concern.

- Brick and mortar stores like Jared, definitely are a bit more than Independent dealers. However, they offer solid warranties, life-time cleanings and other services. It's an easier experience and more of a risk free transaction and you can have a ring set within a day or two. With that comes an added mark-up. That doesn't make big box stores better or worse than independents; both have pros and cons.

- Don't go into deep debt on a ring. Don't listen to the go big or go home crowd. If you are just starting out, would you rather spend thousands on a ring or put that money towards a house? You can always upgrade stones on a later date.

I would tend to agree with your first statement. A good clear rock with fewer imperfections is way better looking than a bigger rock with imperfections or off color. And going with an off size rock say .9 or 1.1 carats will save you some compared to a smooth 1 carat stone and nobody will tell the difference.
