Saturday was rifle opening at out property in NC. My 11 year old grandson, Beckett, surprised me back in the summer by saying he wanted to learn to shoot and to go deer hunting. He had never shown any interest in shooting or hunting prior to this (the other 2 grandsons and granddaughter have no interest at all). I bought him a CZ .22 rifle and started him practicing. We then set up a .245 Winchester in a Ruger M77 with a Boyd's AT One adjustable stock. He seemed to take to it and I deemed that he would be ready so we went hunting opening morning.
When we climbed into the tripod, the wind was 15 knots gusting to 25 and the temperature was around 40. Brutal conditions, particularly for a youngster, but we decided to stick it out. About a quarter of 8 a small doe walked out. She was quartering to us. The wind was starting to shift toward her and I was afraid she was going to wind us. When he whispered "Can I shoot", I gave him the go ahead. He squeezed off a shot and down she went.
