Towing with a new ram 1500

I have done a few searches on here but haven't found what I'm looking for.

Who tows a camper, or 5000 lbs. Plus of some sort with a new ram 1500 hemi, and what do you think? Highway speeds and mpg? Transmission, shifting? I'm thinking of retiring the "bus" and was asked about going back to a half ton. My last one was the reason I went diesel.

How often will you be towing?

Pulls my 14' dump trailer with no issues-8-9k lbs. Depending on what's in it.
If I would have opted for rebel with air suspension it would do even better. My dad has a 17 rebel the air suspension it's pretty cool. I went with the Laramie 4x4 2" mopar lift and 35"x 11.50" tires
      Power is not an issue

9 mpg while pulling a load to Bryan. You can buy a lot of gas for the extra $15,000 you'll spend on a diesel

2018 Dodge 4X4 half ton with lift/295 tires. 1I get 14-17 without towing (lot's city driving) and a solid 6-8 when pulling my 24 foot majek.

Just about the same as my Chevy...

I think it will come down to how often you are pulling something, if only a few times per year then no problem. If once a week you will wear the transmission out eventually.

I think you will be very disappointed if coming from a diesel. I have done it and will never go back to a gaser even if I never pull anything again.

I had a Ford F-350 with the 7.3 Powerstroke and bought a Dodge 1500 with the 5.7 Gas engine. Honestly, the Dodge pulled my 28’ travel trailer better than the F1350 but I never checked the fuel mileage. I now have a Tundra which outpolled both the Ford and Dodge but mileage is 8-9 pulling my travel trailer.

I'll be getting out of an 06 Laramie megacab with the 5.9. I'll be losing space as well. Yes 90% of the time I don't t need it, but the other 10% is Houston to Comstock. It is sure nice to have it when I need it. I hear the new rams are different than the 2003 I had, and i shouldn't worry about. I hope so, because I cussed the whole time I towed with that thing !!

I have a 30 bumper pull camper I pull with mine, it weighs 6900 dry. I can easily pull 70 mph on texas roads, I have never pulled it in very hilly country. Have to use weight distribution hitch.

One thing to note is that the standard rear end in the 1500 is 3.21, I bought mine with a 3.92 rear end, and I know that makes a difference.

It wasn’t the newest Gen Ram, but I pulled an 18’ heavy pipe top trailer with side x side and ATV to Moab Utah from Lubbock TX with a 14’ model. It pulled very well with what was approx 4500-5000 lbs. It didn’t have the wind resistance of a camper though.

I've never been a fan of dodge
But.... I'm really digging the new body style

Why is the tundra not in those test?

Also, check out the new tailgate barn-door option on the Ram. Available as an upgrade option this summer. Costs $1000.

Well, the game plan changed a little. Ended up with a 1500 for a great price. Instantly missed the storage the megacab had, but I got almost double the gas mileage on the way home on fuel that's $1 cheaper a gallon soooooooo. Happy for now.

I'll revisit this thread after towing and see if the love affair is still going
