Default Smallmouth trip

I took my son up to University of Michigan for a gymnastics camp and unofficial visit. We tacked on a guided smallmouth trip with Scott Dobson, FLW 2019 angler of the year. Lake St.Clair is legendary, and we got on some good fish.

Awesome. I’m a serious smallmouth fisherman, but our creek and river fish up here don’t hold a candle to those.

Bucket list trip for me

Bucket list is right. This trip was kinda unplanned, but came together at the last minute when I realized we hand most of a day free and how close we were to some of the worlds best smallmouth fishing.

Wow. My experience catching smallmouth is in the rivers of Arkansas, Missouri and NE Oklahoma- nothing close to that size! Bet that was a tail-walking air flippin fight!

Great fish. Some of my best smallmouth fishing was on float trips on the the New River Gorge in West Virginia. I've caught several 5 pounders. Some of the guides use drift boats rather than rafts.

Great pics!! The smiles pretty much put an explanation point on the post!!! Congratulations to the both of you!!
Back in the 80's/90's when we had the Moody ranch leased, we fished the Rio grande below Amistad in canoes and caught some toads of small mouth!! I had a 4lb 12 ounce as my PB, but lots high 3's and low 4's... They sure do fight hard and especially in that swift water below the dam... I didn't even know there were smallmouth in Texas... Only place I ever fished for 'em before that was Lake Erie...

Wow, those are huge! I've only been for smallmouth once and caught three, all between 1.5 lbs and 2.5 lbs. They fought like tigers, all three, so I can just imagine how much fun it was getting those in. That's awesome.

Man ya’ll caught some nice fish. Very cool to fish different waters.

My buddy’s son got a full ride there for gymnastics. He loves it. The cold was an eye opener. Good luck to your son.

Man catching great fish aside, to share a boat with Scott and pick his brain about those smallmouth would be well worth the trip. That man is on another level when it comes to the smallies up there.

I tried lol. He wasn't super talkative, but I asked a bunch of questions. Mostly about smallmouth behaviors and preferences, not much about seasonal patterns etc. He had just got 7th in a 200 boat tournament there on Saturday and we went back to his pattern on Monday.

From what I've heard you can always find his name near the top on the lakes up there. He's a stick for sure. I fished with a pro on his homes water's last year and it is incredible how in tune those guys can be with the fish and how well they know their water.
