Year 4 of our opening weekend Duck Camp tradition continues. Some years we have more guys some years we have less, but the number of people does not affect with the good times had by all.
This year one of my buddies came out who just got into duck hunting last year and really wanted to shoot his first deer this year so him and his wife can eat good clean meat. The first night we sat in the stands and didn't see anything(Classic beginners first deer hunt). The second night we had deer all around us. Does, babies, spikes, and nice bucks. I decided to let him shoot the spike so the nice bucks could keep breeding. He had a great shoulder shot and it went down about 30 yards away.
The wood duck roost always provides a fun quick morning hunt. No decoys, just get up about 15 min before shooting light, go outside, and wait for a couple to fly over heading to their feeding grounds. I showed them how to pluck the whole birds and then we roasted the full birds over the fire.
The best memories are made in the most simple places.
