    Honda Gold Wing~ questions

I found a 2000 Gold Wing with 19k miles for 6500.00. This is something I have always wanted. The bike looks very clean, garaged since new. He just had timing belts changed and carbs tuned. Any suggestions on other things to look at?

As far as wear and tear on the bike, it is essentially brand new. Brake pads should be fine for at least another 10,000 miles. Air filter should be fine. However, you should consider having the oil, clutch fluid, and brake fluid changed. Oil just because, but clutch and brake fluid because they are old and overdue at this point. Honda does a minor service package where they go through the bike for $150 and then do an oil change.

Take time to check all the electronics and functions on the bike when you check it out. There are some good videos on YouTube on what to check, but these bikes are so solid I wouldn’t expect there to be much to worry about. There is a great GL1800 forum, that although isn’t specific to your bike is full of people with tons of experience on the 1500’s that can offer advice.

I just got my first Wing at the end of June. We love it. My wife and I have put 4000 miles on it already and will be putting a lot more in now that it has cooled off. If you want to meet up and ride some time, gimme a shout. We’re in Kingwood but always looking for an excuse to ride somewhere. Good luck with it!

I bought a 2003 gl1800 2 years ago with 10,500 miles for 6,500.00 it was garage kept one owner and had had all the service records, I did the oil change myself and road it and it felt loose on the roadway. I checked the tires and had correct air pressure but were 8 years old so I replaced them with some new elite 4’s other than that it’s been a great bike. Some of the switches were a bit sticky so I sprayed with contact cleaner and also replaced the battery. I had 11,000 miles on it in Jan and today I hit 25,000 no issues

I am guessing that the tires are date coded like car/truck tires? This bike has the plug ins for the helmets to use for communication with passenger. Is there a special helmet that needs to be used? I am not sure if he has helmets to go with it. I am guessing he does not. It has a CB and stereo with cassette player. Can an aftermarket stereo be added or is the stock stereo good? Will dealerships work on bikes this old? I ask because on my class A RV the dealerships around here will not work on it due to its age. How hard is it to get a motorcycle license? The Harley dealer here advertises courses for bike safety, I need to check into that as well

            Have you ridden before?

A goldwing is an 1800cc flat 6 cylinder that weighs about 850lbs.

I dont mean to discourage but it is ALOT of bike.

            To answer your questions.

There are helmets that have speakers/microphone built in. I use an over the ear system with my half helmet that plugs into my Harley.

There is a massive aftermarket system for Goldwings and audio will be supported

Yes, dealerships/mechanics will work on it.

To get an M endorsement on your DL, you need to take a motorcycle safety course and then provide the DL office with the certificate.

Where are you located? In Houston, Awesome Cycles runs a great safety class, including a license test waiver class.

On the CB, my 2013 also has the connection but the common thing these days is to use a Bluetooth unit. Cardo and Sena are two popular brands. The Bluetooth will let you listen to music from your home, navigation directions, make phone calls, etc from your bike. You can also get a Bluetooth connection to the bike that will play music from your phone through the bike speakers. Each of these options will be cheaper than an aftermarket stereo.

Most Honda dealerships will do regular service like tire changing and oil/brake/clutch etc. I am not sure if they will do major electrical or engine work on a bike of that era, but fortunately the odds are you won’t need it.

Without a doubt. The Goldwing, is the finest road bike that was ever made.
The only fault, I could find, was the early one's had carbs.
And they did not like the mountains, unless they were specificlly tuned.
There are so many upgrades, and aftermarket stuff for these bikes.
I don't know how many thousands of miles, I put on mine.. But, it never
left me stranded.. And it, never got tired of the road..
Good luck, with your purchase. And stay safe..

Its been a good 20 years since I have ridden a bike any real distance. I have played with this bike some in the neighborhood.

You might try calling around to see which shops service them and what kind of work they would do on a GL1500.

Sounds like a nice deal, I am one that had not ridden in over 20 years and went out bought a 2012 HD Electra Glide Limited Ultra, man, I was used to my Dyna wide Glide, this thing is a beast, heavy as hell and just feels heavy in the turns and making simple turns .. I respect it very much, especially after i did a tap on the front brake while turn into my garage on my patio and it went down.. took 2 of us to upright it.. be safe, and good luck finding what you need.

I was a motorcycle officer in San Antonio for the last part of my 30 years ,I rode the gold wing gl1800 and the gl1500 both great bikes, as others have stated it is a lot of bike but nothing that time and practice won’t remedy. I’ve personally owned road kings and electraglides for off duty escorts but went back to the wing. Unless your dead set on that bike I’ll bet you can find a nice gl1800 for around the same price and miles and they handle a lot better than the older gl1500. Just my 2 cents

Where are you guys seeing the GL 1800 in the 6500.00-ish price range? I have not had any luck finding one close to that dollar amount. Maybe I am not looking in the right place/area

Here’s a few. There were others but they had higher mileage. You could also check eBay Motors and CycleTrader
