My 14 year old’s current project

So last week my son and I were discussing his next couple of years and him coming up with the money to buy, or help buy his first vehicle. We were discussing jobs and how to work around his school schedule, football, baseball, and soon to be Ag (I’m hoping he gets involved with FFA). Earlier this week he told me he wanted to try and do something on his own vs. flipping burgers or something similar. I told him to give it some thought and research and see what he could come up with. He decided he wanted to build things and came up with trying to build rustic wood burned flags. He came up with a list of materials and hit the box store yesterday. He had me in the garage early this morning to get started. Here’s where he’s at so far.

I put a jig together and showed him how it would speed things up for him when he started building more.

He did all the sanding, cutting, burning, and staining.

I hammered the razor blades in, and managed to cut myself twice😁

Tomorrow he’ll assemble and the start cutting the stars with the Dremel before finishing with 3 coats of clear.

Proud of his initiative and willingness to jump in with both feet!

Sorry for the sideways pics. Never can figure out why they do that.

Just noticed he robbed me of my TBH hat!!

I want one. PM me on how much and when I can get it. Also, is he going to make Texas flags?

He’s thinking $85 for a standard USA or Tx flag. He wants to start customizing them with other carved graphics on them, but we need to get the stencils and he’s got to spend some more time behind the Dremel before he starts selling those.

Look forward to seeing the finished product.

The pine looks nice. I also use rough cedar and really like the way they look. Cool to see him taking some initiative.

                    He’s making progress today.

Got it glued and nailed in this morning.

Next was stenciling the stars in the union and outlining them with the Dremel.

He’s carving out the stars now, then on to sanding.

Should get at least the first coat of clear on today and finish tomorrow.

That's awesome! My 14yo has taken an interest in woodworking as well. We built a viking chair/camp chair and a set of cornhole boards last week.

He’s doing a great job! Where did you all find the stencils?

He found them on line. Not sure where. I’d have to check.
