Default Southeast Iowa Live..Come along for the season

I hope to take you thru my season here in Iowa. I will be hunting our ground, several of my neighbors farms, and public ground. I will be hunting most everyday at least some. I still have a lot of chores around our farm heading into the winter.

This is my first sit as an Iowa resident. I was planning to start hunting around October 25 but I couldn't wait any longer. Hopefully the "October Lull" is winding down and pre-rut is beginning.

I am in the "Terrace Stand" this evening. I have standing corn to my north, alfalfa/clover mix to my east and oats to my west. I am sitting above a small flowing creek with 3 trails crossing. The wind is light out the north. It's about 55 degrees

Despite what you see on TV and have heard, Iowa hunting is not easy. There is abundant food sources everywhere. It's harvest season and a lot depends on what the farmers are doing. You try to set up using all the Intel from scouting, game cams, observation at dawn and dusk, etc. You never really know which trail the deer are going to come from. Then you have to be fortunate enough to stop them in your shooting lanes and make the shot.

The deer density is not high. The buck to for ratio is great, but the actual number of deer is not high at all compared to parts of Texas.

If you have ever hunted Hagerman you will know what I am describing. This is like hunting Hagerman everyday. The potential for a huge buck is always there. You got to be on your toes every second and also have some good luck.

I will do my best to keep this thread updated.

Just made it back to the house and had dinner. Not a bad first sit. I saw a doe running along the edge of the clover field about 15 minutes before dark. About 2 minutes later a 120" eight point came thru on her trail. When I was getting down I spooked two deer that I could not identify in the greenbelt between the standing corn and the creek. I will give this stand several days rest. Back at it tomorrow in another location.

Here are a few I have been watching.

The biggest buck of these (13 point) has already broke off his G3 on the right side.

We are about 20 miles from Moravia. I hunted here as a nonresident in 2017. Yes. The bucks really respond to rattling and decoys. Around November 1st....it will get crazy.

I will do some all day sits when the time is right for them. November 1st thru November 15th is prime and then around the week of Thanksgiving for round two.

I am doing some yard work today, checking a camera this afternoon and then will be in the stand this evening. I don't want to wear myself out. I have until early January to fill my tags. Bow season, Firearms season and late bow season.

Erosion control. I do have a nice little kill plot back in the timber thats looking good...even though I just planted it a couple of weeks ago. Gotta love this Iowa soil and moisture.

Just got in my Creek bottom scrape stand for an evening sit. This stand is in the North Fabius River bottom. The North Fabius flows all the way to the Mississippi River but we are on the headwaters here in Southeast Iowa.

This stand is at the base of a steep ridge where several trails come together. There is always...at least for the last few years...a scrape here. It appears to be just getting started this year. When I drew a nonresident tag in 2017 I killed a big doe here.

This bottom is full of Black Walnut, Elm, Honey Locust, Hedge (Bois d Arc), with White Oaks up on the ridge.

It's been windy today but it has laid. Very light breeze and about 60 degrees.

Let's see what happens here in the next couple of hours.

Thought I would try a soft grunt call a 5:45.
Nothing.
At 5:50 I tried a louder grunt. This guy came running in. He is still here trying to figure out where it came from. Guess I am going to have to wait till dark to get down. It is amazing how these Iowa bucks respond to grunts, rattling, and decoys. Text book.

You got that right !!!

Marty (bow5) hunted our place with me in 2017. He helped me drag a doe up the ridge to my left. It's about a 45 degree angle up to the fence where my neighbor could get a side by side in to pick it up.

He is a chunky son of a gun. I have hunted a lot of places where I would have shot him without even thinking about it....but not here....not in October.

Memphis is 36 miles from our front gate. It's got to be good hunting around there. Just south of Van Buren county, Iowa.

I didn't hunt yesterday evening. The wind was howling behind the front that came through. This was the same front that created the tornado in Dallas. I did go pull a card from a camera that I put on a scrape about 150 yards behind the house. There is a pretty nice buck checking it. Big bodied deer !!

I will probably hunt this evening if the wind lays down. I might do a hang and hunt in an area on our place that I have never hunted before. We will see what the day brings.

I am in the stand for my first morning hunt of the season.

I am back in the Terrace stand. I have not hunted this stand in several days. 45 degrees. Very light southeast breeze after two days of high winds. I didn't hunt the last two days with the gusty winds. The wind is not perfect for this stand but not that bad.

The deer should be up and moving this morning.

Let's see what happens.
