Looking forward to this thread again. Running behind this year but am heading to Archer this weekend. My place in Jacksboro has plenty of pigs but slow deer activity so far. Good luck to everyone this year!

Nice bucks Mr. Dave. I'm going up to dove hunt this weekend and check camera cards. Hope to have some targets to show here next week. Fingers crossed. Hopefully doves will be flying.

I've hardly seen Young county in a few months, it's just been too **** hot to make the trip fun. I do have 3 cameras running and all my feeders full, going to have a look next weekend.

The broomweed was really bad in some places, but not as widespread as the drought years. It will meet it's demise next weekend if we can keep the ol Allis Chalmers running.

Young County here. This is the 3rd year on my place and the buck quality this year is leaps and bounds above the first two, especially last year which was so dry all summer.

I got 8.0 inches of rain in June and 5.6 in July which really helped things. Range conditions are great and the deer were on the protein hard all spring and summer. I tried some roasted soybeans and the deer ate that stuff like it was crack.

I have been running 4 cell cameras and will bump that to 10 in another week. I have some deer that went from 4 year olds to 5 and put on over 20 inches. I still have a few that I'm looking for and hopefully I'll get them on camera once I put the rest out. Overall this should be a great year.

Default Went out this weekend

We went out Saturday until this morning. No dove! One dead rattle snake by the front door at camp. Fixed a motor on a feeder. Found a tower blind with blind blown off. Mowed, seeded and dragged 3 food plots. And tore a rotten blind off a 6 ft tower and put a new 6x6x6 bow and gun blind up.
One of the guys had the buck in the first picture I posted earlier walk 30 yards from him. He said he has 16 points, base 10 and 6 kickers, 19-20 wide and kinda thin horned. Might be 4 years old. Need to let him walk but I don't think he will make it if seen. He saw the straight 10 and thought he was 5-6 and heavy.
We saw 3-4 other bucks too.
Good thing is they all were coming off the Waggoner!

I guess it's gonna be **** hot again this weekend....oh well. I'm anxious to get out there and get the rest of my rat killin done, check those cameras, try to catch a fish or two, and let my son shoot a little and do deer lease stuff.

A fat ribeye and some football won't hurt my feelins either.

Do any of the Wilbarger County brotherhood have any experience w/ feeding Horns Plus in the area? Our rancher has bought a bunch of bulk corn i can use. I'm thinking of using a combination of protein, corn, and Horns Plus in a timed Boss Buck protein feeder as an attractant during the season. Do Wilbarger County deer eat Horns Plus? Any insight is appreciated.

That's been pretty much my experience as well. I just hadn't tried Horns Plus. Going to start using the road feeder next weekend. Really looking forward to the season. My son and i have jumped hogs, pretty decent sized ones, in grass each of the last two trips out. Luckily the pigs have just run away. We have to start remembering to take a pistol, shotgun, or something into the field with us. Jumping a pig at 20' is not fun. Grass so tall you just can't see the bastages.

We mowed for 6 hrs at 3 blinds last weekend. In my experience, the deer HATE walking in that stuff, throw in a huge mast crop, and they can almost dissapear by November.

Get a blind or two ready back in the thick stuff, and start hand feeding.

It did the Beaver split, barely settled the dust, it still ran all the birds off.

That's good. Our place and the Haverkamps are about 2 miles as the crow flies, 7 miles by road. They get 3 inches we get none. We get 3 inches they get none. Beaver creek splits us and has a magical influence on storms.

I went up yesterday with a truck load of corn to fill feeders and pull camera cards. Got to Wichita Falls and saw roadside ditches full of water and rain driving. Drove on to Vernon. Pretty wet there as well. Lightning to the southwest, where i was going to go this morning to fill feeders. Rain forecast was for 30% - 40% chance of light rain. Suffice it to say the actual rain was a lot more. We just unloaded the corn in the barn and came back home last night. No filled feeders, no camera cards, no nothing. Oh well, opening weekend is upon us. Hopefully it'll be dry enough to do some damage next weekend.

Good luck everyone.
