First pistol hunt, first pistol kill. S&W M686 with cast 158SWC from a Lyman mold pushed by Unique power at just over 1100fps. It’s a very light 357 load, but hitting them in the dome it’s plenty. Javi was shot at 23yds from a ground blind.

Dang, why is my pic so small.....lol

Here is a zebra I shot back in August with a 260 Rem TC Encore I got off TBH. The shot was about 75 yds and he ran maybe 100 before piling up. Needless to say, I am addicted to handgun hunting.

Nice thread here. Makes me wanna break out my 44 Redhawk with 2 x Leupold. Never shot a deer with it but it was always with me as a back-up and close shots. Never got the right shot on a deer though.

Default scope question

I think I want to scope my Super Blackhawk Hunter. I have never shot a scoped pistol.
Is variable power important? It seems like an 8:1 one scope would not be especially helpful for hunting.

Or would you stick with a 1.5 or 2.0 to 1 fixed.
Also if anybody in the Houston area has one they want to part with let me know.
I'm thinking of a Nikon or Weaver, but open to anything.
Thanks in advance

Variable is always nice to have in case you need it for longer distances. Especially on smaller animals. But then again if all you plan to use it for are shots 75 yards and under on deer and hogs, a 2X will serve you just fine. And...you can buy a very nice used 2X Leupold handgun scope off an auction site for pretty cheap. Nothing wrong with Nikon or Weaver either. The only brand of handgun scopes I suggest staying away from is Burris. Their eye relief is horrible when you dial up the magnification.

Good luck and show us your set up once you decide!

Congrats on the 40 yard doe!

I can now add this one to the mix-

Judge using .45lc Hornady lever revolution ammo. ~15 yard shot- rib cage (other side) with no exit.
No blood trail- I only found her because I stubbornly didnít stop looking due to not to believing that I missed at that distance.

I did gut this doe to try and recover the bullet- insides were a wreak, gave up on finding the bullet .

I've always had an interest in getting into hunting with a pistol. I've shot a few pigs and javelina over the year's with my 10mm but never had the confidence to use a pistol as my primary hunting method. I've been looking for 44, 454 or 460 for a while but have never came across the right deal. This thread definitely makes me want to get in gear and try to find one.

I’m about to dabble in this a bit. I just dropped my 10mm off to get milled for a red dot sight should be ready in a few weeks. Who has had good success with the 10mm?

Iíve killed a couple of does and a bunch of pigs with my 10mm.

I normally use Underwood 200 grain XTP or 220 grain hard cast.

This thread inspired me to finally give pistol hunting a real try. Iíve had other attempts before with pistols and set ups, but finally found a combo that works for me. Smith & Wesson 686 .357 Magnum, Vortex Venom and Sig 125 grain jacketed hollow points did the trick on this buck. To say Iím jazzed and hooked would be an understatement.

I have been wanting to try out my my carry gun on a deer for a few years. Christmas Eve I shot a nice doe with my Glock 19. 15 yards broadside with Hornady critical defense rounds. Bullet went through both lungs and out the other side. She ran 90 yards but had no problem tracking her down.
This was my first handgun kill. I am seriously considering getting a legitimate pistol to hunt with.

Jboettiger/John316 - Congrats to you both on your first handgun kills! It's an awesome accomplishment and quite a rush. John316-make sure you post pics of whatever you end up with.

Cantexduck - congrats to you as well. 20 in one season is freaking awesome. Great pics too!

Given the various pistols and optics on this thread, does anyone have a suggestion of a holster maker that can make something for me? Iíve been carrying in a small case, but would like something more practical? If this is the wrong place to ask, please forgive me.

I can’t wait to get my glock 20 back, I dropped it off for a bunch of work from milling the slide for a Burris fastfire and additional cuts, frame work and stippling, and a new trigger. Can’t wait!
