Default Jury duty

Finished with jury duty yesterday. Sent a guy to prison for the rest of his life. Even though I have no doubts he was guilty of the most disgusting of crimes, its weighing a little heavy on my heart today. I think our justice system, even with its flaws, is the best in the world. But its a lot to think about when you are one of the people who make that decision.

I'm over 50 years old, and am pretty squared away. Been married almost 27 years. House paid for, good nest egg put away, raised an awesome girl with a great wife. I've buried both of my parents. Lots of stuff adults do. For some reason, sitting on this jury made me feel a little more grown up. Not sure why.
Oh well, got that off my chest. Yall have a great weekend

My 30 year old son recently served as foreman on a DWI trial in Washington state. He said they found him guilty. Haven’t talked to him about details yet.

If you have ever had to deal with the justice system, i bet u would say otherwise. Its screwed up big time. U are guilty until proven innocent, its all about how much money they can squeeze out of u.

Thank you for your willingness to serve. Some years ago I served on a jury like the one you were on. Unfortunately we ended up with a hung jury (11 to convict, 1 couldn't get beyond the "shadow of a doubt" concept). Found out later the scumbag was re-tried and found guilty.

Thank you for serving, especially on such a hideous offence.

I went through Jury selection on a similar case and was not picked. During the process they let us know it was a sexual assault case against a minor. Just hearing that and even now makes my stomach turn.

I've been called twice and picked once. Capital murder trial. Kid killed his pregnant girlfriend to keep his parents from finding out he got her pregnant. Judge gave him life in prison. It was tough, but I was glad I did it.

I've heard there is a lot of truth to this by friends and neighbors who work in at the prison in Beaumont... They get a whole lot of their own treatment, or get put in isolation to avoid it. They say the isolation overtime is just as bad on the guys as it is getting paid back by other inmates. They say it doesn't matter what you're in there for, everyone hates someone who hurts kids.

I take great pride in fulfilling my jury duty service. Lots of folks do their best to get out of it. My feeling is that if I was ever in that unfortunate situation, I'd want people like me on the jury.

It's not easy, but thank you for stepping up.

I was on a capital murder jury years ago . It lasted 30 days, we found him guilty. He was sentenced to death by lethal injection. Sentence carried out six months later after an appeal. Judge contacted all twelve jurors when it was done.

I have been picked a couple of times but never had to really serve as different things kept the trial from proceeding. Thanks for you service. It is nice to read about someone that served as opposed to the losers that brag about getting out of their duty.

I know exactly how you feel Bullhead44. I sat on a jury when we still lived in Austin for the same type of case.

Made me sick to my stomach, mad as hell and proud to be able to serve all at the same time.

We found him guilty as well. Thank you for your jury service.

Only lived here for 8 months and was called for jury duty in a sleepy little town for murder2 weeks ago. The young man was found guilty by a jury of his peers and given the maximum sentence which was 99 years. It’s our duty to serve the community. It surprised me how many got out of it.

I got called every 2 or 3 years when I lived in Tarrant County. Moved to Parker County in 1999 and have NEVER been called.

I think it says a lot about your character that your involvement affects you this way. It means you take it seriously. Even when somebody deserves a severe punishment, it's still a human being we're talking about. In the Proverbs it says, "Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart rejoice when he stumbles" (Proverbs 24:17). That's an attitude that doesn't come naturally for most people.

I have been picked on 3 jury’s.
2 were settled with out a trial.
The one that went to trial we convicted and we sentenced him to 60 years.
I know someone has to serve but I just can’t get past the judging part.
The judge and you will be judged part is what bothers me.

Thank you for doing your civic duty sir

5 years ago I was on a jury for a guy that committed the worst type of crime on society. We deliberated for less than 10 minutes, and the judge gave him 60 years.

I’m 55 and last week finished only my 2nd jury service. We sent a 32 year old
Man to prison for 45 years for continuous sexual assault of a minor. (Which turned out to be his 6 year old daughter). Very sick man and was hard to listen to the little girl who is now 9 get on the stand and say what he did to her on several occasions. After the trial the judge spoke to us and said this was his second trial for this charge the first one ended in a hung jury. We also found out he is also up on the same charge for his other daughter as well. I wished after all that we had gave him life which was an option. We had a retired correctional officer on the jury and he said this guy won’t make it inside there very long.
