Real 43 copper penny is almost as rare as a black panther. There are some but very few. Try a magnet on it to see if it's plated steel.

I don't believe, pennies were made from copper,
            during the war..............

Yes, they were copper with the exception of the 1943 penny.

Walker, the penny says 1942, not 1943.

Yep, that's what I'm thinking too. Maybe someone born in 1942, 79 years old. How old was the FIL?

At over 12 grams it's almost as heavy as a half dollar, so it's not a 1942 cent struck on a nickel or quarter planchet and too small to be a half dollar. I thought perhaps struck on a foreign coin blank, but you can see the raised rim of the penny which makes me believe it is an "encased cent". They usually had advertising slogans or "lucky penny" stamped on them but someone may have made their own.

                        This doesn’t make any cents!

But that is a surprise.. Considering the scrap metal drives,
                          my grandmother told me about......

I don't know where I got 1943. Senility I guess, but I still say it's a trinket of some sort.
