    Psuedo Rabies Virus

Got a call from a buddy of mine this evening telling me that his Father-in-Law lost one of his best bird dogs and his old yard dog to PRV. One of the dogs had killed and brought back up a wild piglet and a few hours later both dogs were dying and had to be put down.

First, I’d never heard of such and had to Google it.

Second, this was in Cass County, so any of you boys running hog dogs in that area beware.

That is odd. Usually quarantine them for 10 days then either put them down or they are ok. A few hours had to be something else.

That’s what I was told.[emoji2369]. Now, maybe they just started getting sick and he looked around and found the piglet that had been there for a week. That I don’t know.

Everything I’ve read says it’s almost alway fatal. I don’t know. Like I said, I’d never even heard of it before.

Just verified...brought pig up on Tuesday afternoon. Showed symptoms Wednesday afternoon. Dead Thursday Morning. Yard dog showed symptoms on Thursday and was put down Friday morning. A few hours is relative.[emoji6][emoji23]

              Wow
Father had a state trapper on his farm trapping pigs several years ago
Every pig they caught would shoot them and draw blood
Out of about 23 pigs more than half tested positive for PRV and or brucellosis. I don’t think people can get PRV but brucellosis is called undulant fever in people
              Be careful messing with hogs
I did not know it would affect dogs.

I had no idea it acted so quickly

I will gut a deer in a pinch with bare hands but not a pig

I’ve never seen it, I remember vaccinating our show hogs for it.

I just looked it up. It said any infected secondary host (critter other than a pig) generally only lives 2 to 3 days.

I try to use gloves for either but I have been known to not in a pinch. Like this last year when you couldn't find gloves.
Especially if you have unhealed wounds on your hands.

From what I’ve read....humans and horses are about the only mammals that can’t contract it. Further, birds don’t get it either. Weird.
