Not trying to hijack the thread but does anyone have a rough price for just the concrete and metal building? My wife and I have also considered doing a barndo and would like to do all the interior ourselves.

When it comes to the decision to build a bardo or conventional house with a separate barn... if you add your shop price to the bardo build it would greatly lower the price per square foot.

I guess there's different ways of accounting, but my main question would be, does it really save you money when it comes to the living area?

I can go either way, and as it sits right now, from what I've read, a conventional home with have a better return down the road if I want to sell it.

        Way better.

It's like buying a Ford Escort then saying 'but it cost less than your BMW so I got a better deal'.
Not to mention the market wanting to buy a 'house' like that is probably <1% of potential buyers.

I was interested in building one but I can't get over the cheap look, poor return on investment & tougher to insure.

For comparison/reference, we just built a house on our 30 acres over the last year. I personally did the plumbing and electric and we finished out around $65/ft. We didn't go overboard with finish but it is more than nice. I was quoted by a contractor to build our house for us at $125/sq ft so if you have the time and a little patience you can sub it yourself and safe a ton of money.

Yes, but where the savings really starts to be large is when you add shop. It would have cost me about $150K more to have conventional 2000 sq ft house with 800 sq ft of porch, 2200 Sq ft shop with 1500 Sq ft shed. I would have the exact same space, just arranged differently.

I don't think you can carve out just the living, but guess it would still be cheaper than conventional. The inside living area build out cost should be about same in either structure. You can spend as little or as much as you want there.

My 40X60 with 12 ft eaves and a 10x60 covered porch cost about 38K for the metal building and the concrete cost about 20k. 2 walk doors, 1 roll up door and 10 windows.

As stated above it is around $25-$30 a foot for concrete and metal building installed.
