    Ways to support small businesses

One of our great dealers out of Dripping Springs shared this, Triple S Feed.

We thought it was a simple and creative way to help support your local small businesses and those here on TBH.

We know not everyone uses social media (totally respect you for that), but a lot of the small businesses do to help them connect and communicate with their customers.

If they don't want me asking for a discount I'll go somewhere else. A credit card company charges them at least 3%. If I pay cash why shouldn't I ask for a 3% discount on big ticket items? If they don't want to give it I'll whip out my credit card and earn points.

I really shouldn’t, but I will. Have you ever stopped to think that possibly this is how small businesses maintain a marginal bottom line? 50% of sales on card cost the merchant 3%. 50% of sales is cash that brings sales transactions down to 1 1/2 % negative towards profit margin. If they give 3% discount for cash sales that business is destined to fail without increasing prices to match the transaction fees. Maybe this doesn’t sound like much but in todays struggling economy businesses are having a very hard time maintaining without raising prices more than they have to just to pay the bills.

Depending on volume very few businesses can survive on any profit margin below 7 or 8 % and that’s thin. Take 3% of that out and your toast.

I applaud this sponsor for recognizing other sponsors and realizing without the logos of sponsorship that you see on this forum it wouldn’t be possible for any of us to voice our opinions are enjoy the fellowship that it offers.

That is a hot button item for some people. People can get into Internet arguments or shouting matches in person over credit card sales. The same can be said for self checkouts at Lowe’s, H-E-B, Walmart, CVS Pharmacy, Costco, etc. Talk about hard feelings…… I always find comedy when people single out Walmart but 90% of the other stores that they shop at probably have the same thing. But…… that’s another topic.

I look at the price I pay as the cost of a service/item and the owner’s cost of doing business. The business owner has to pay for credit card charges, utility bills, rent, employees, food or merchandise cost, etc.

I am sure in many parts of Texas the winter utility bills might not be nearly as high as in summer. Do some people expect a discount in the winter? Hey, I paid $35 for this steak in August so I need to pay $32 in December!!

Whether a business is charging enough to absorb the 3%, adds it later or whatever. If I don’t like the price then I will go somewhere ielse or do without.

                            First World problems.
