I'm not overly impressed with my google search findings. I'm trying to decide if I should just break down and drop the $2,500-$3,700 to have it done or if I should just do a simple gate for now then build the inset entrance myself in the future. Does anyone have any pictures of an 8' entrance/gate? Thanks

Are you planning on selling hunts to John Q hunter? If so, it might be worth a fancy gate.

Along the same lines, how much does putting in a plain jane gate cost?

My property was cut out of a larger tract, and it's currently completely fenced. No gate. It's never been an issue as I just hop over, but I literally cannot even drive on it.

Just a plain gate with the minimum support will be $800-$1000

If you can have an entrance and gate built for $2500-$3700, I'd jump on that. I have more than that in material alone on my entrance, and I built it myself.

The $2,500 figure is to bring the regular wire fence to the gate @20' inset off the road. $3,700 is if I choose to go with a pipe frame with paneling instead of the wire.

i have a "plain Jane" gate....it is functional and I couldn't see spending that money on an entrance. However I am on a seldom traveled road....I could see spending the money on a nicer entrance if I were on a road with a lot of traffic.

A custom 8' tall driveway gate without an opener will run you from $150.00-$200.00 per linier foot. The gate opener will be in the $1500.00-$1800.00 range.

Here's one I did a while back. We do about 3-4 gates a month.

Man, beautiful work. My place is in a larger subdivided ranch that already has a very nice gate, so I'd probably go with a *cough* little more standard (cheap) deal, but that is great.

Make it taller than you think you need. Or don’t include an arch. Sooner or later, you’ll need to get a tall truck/trailer through.

This for sure! Try to design it so that it does not have an arch or anything across the path between the gates/posts...

Thank you sir. I didn't do a thread, I've actually owned the property for @10 years but here recently my uncle sold the place next to mine and up until now I've just accessed my place through his gate.

Yessir, you make a fair point about that and it is a real problem in many large entrances...
However, If it is designed correctly, it can be done... You also make a fair point about the height of 16 foot high being good, though having nothing there would be better, just might be more expensive.

Edit: my post is in response to Ironman... S&S pretty much said the same thing at the same time...

Agreed. It would be more expensive, due to the fact that anything shy of a very deep drilled pier and decent footing poured for your gate post, settling over time will happen.

Anyone battle the settling problem with a connecting beam under the ground between the posts, instead of spanning over it? Of course it wont look as good as an arch.

I have not, but I can see a grade beam spanning from post pier to post pier working though. That would be better than not having them tied together.

This or if a cattle guard is involved, it could be used as the reinforcement... If it is not in the current thinking, it might be worthwhile considering putting one in just for that reason...

Absolutely on the cattle guard. I started to mention that, but didn't want to muddy the water.

If your not doing an "entry" as such, and just going with a TSC type gates, you can do it cheaper. I guess I really don't know what you have in mind.

No sir, unfortunately we don't hunt the place outside of Cuero anymore. This place is some family land that I inherited between Fredericksburg and Kerrville.

Yeah, it just popped in my head while reading the last few posts here. Also brace posts on either side would help too. I have only built a couple of small gates though, so I'm not a fence/gate pro.

Ones with arches I have seen look good, but I can see sooner or later needing to move something tall through. Another alternative could be an auxiliary gate down the fence somewhere.

Yeah, if I need more than 16' height, I would just cut my barbed wire fence to let it in. I just can't think of ANYTHING that would cause that to happen, and I own large motor cranes that will fit through my entrance.
